originally planned to head up to magic last sunday, but was snowed in by the blizzard dropping three feet on my door step. yesterday was supposed to be my rain check day, but car troubles shortly after leaving home had me calling mechanics and opting for a skin at a local lost ski area. finally, today i was able to make it up to magic.
it was pretty rough skiing out there folks. if you value your bases and don't have rock skis, you'll want to stick to the groomers as it was pretty much impossible to ski anything rated a black diamond without taking at least minor base damage.
actually, the groomers were quite good! great coverage and skied very nicely. essentially, most trails on skier's right of the double were groomed. i would hazard a guess that magic actually has some of the best cruising to be had in new england on a sunday afternoon when the more crowded ski areas (and even less crowded mountains like cannon and wildcat) are scraped to crap.
everything was "open" but you needed a death wish to ski master magician and you needed your head checked to ski red line. not so much for lack of cover, you could band out either easily enough  but rather because stuff was lurking underneath and a fall would be serious business.
after warmup, i started on broomstick to heart . then i headed wizard to sorcerer followed by witch to lucifer. it was all crap quite frankly, but i was skiing challenging terrain on natural snow for only the fifth time this season, so i was happy!
every kind of geological treat was present including but not limited to rocks, stones, sticks, stumps, roots, waterbars, grass, dirt, etc. everything seemed in abundance except snow! but there was just enough in most places to keep it worth while. most of the time.
i eventually got used to the scraping sound of my bases slowly being withered away. i ducked into twilight zone which was awesome up top, so so in the middle, and pretty rocky down low. goniff glade at the top probably had the best snow on the mountain, which slowly deteriorated to the point that it wasn't worth trying again for said best snow on the mountain. skip slide of hans if you're heading up any time soon as it's a total waste.
regarding snow quality, there was just a tad of powder remaining from last week, but it was mostly the chowdah variety that's somewhere between all the conditions i like but hasn't consolidated into bumps yet. icky. natural snow trails were mostly packed pow inbetween the interesting geological features begging for ptex. another one foot dump would be really good right about now!
