Mittersill, NH: 10/24/04 [Hike]

on this day last year (it's worth checking the old forums), lftgly posted pics of two guys with s*** eatting grins on their faces making fresh tracks all over cannon in earn your turns pow. sensational. october 24th of '04 would not offer up the same pre-season blessings unfortunately, but made for one incredible hike while much of southern new england was still in cold, clamy, gloom.

tuckerbrook up, various mittersill trails down. there was a small strech in the 13 turns in which the ground seemed kinda firm and crunchy and there was a tad of frost, but for the most part it felt like early september up there. i never even put on my fleece and the summit under the sun was warm enough to dry some wet clothes from the hike up. no snow visible on cannon at all and only trace amounts of white visible around lafayette's summit. cannon is still sporting a nice snowy pic on their web page, but here's what it looked like this past weekend. someone's been busy building a hit which i'm unsure how i feel about.

here's the money shot of the afternoon. too bad that pond wasn't iced over, as great of a shot as that is.

if you're gonna do it, do it right. make it so big that people won't want to take the time tear it down or take it apart. that thing should be thrown. looked pointless anyways.

i was out building a hit myself this past weekend in a favorite backcountry spot i like to frequent. dragged some dead logs and branches out of the woods to build a pile about 5' high, 8' wide, and about 15' long. solo mission for 2hrs straight. dam, that was a lot of work. it's in the shape of a jump already and will probably all get buried, but we'll see what happens. i'm hopeing that it just piles ontop of all the branches so i can pack it down and go from there. it'll probably just all get blown off the top though. thing is, there's about 3'-4' base in the middle of the season, so i might just have to build it up every time i go this winter. wish i had a camera to show it off. i'm not sure how to post pics anyways that are larger than that 12mb or whatever it is. gotta look into that at some point.

I am the same way about the jump, it might be fun come this winter though, mabye some nice soft landings, but if i remeber right it is fairly flat behind where that jump would be??? bad placement?

12MB! :shock: that'd be one heck of a big/high resolution shot! if you need to scale back a picture, you can just use photo editing software to resize it. do a google search for IrfanView, that's an easy, compact, and free program that can always get the job done.

salida, the hill kinda falls off after the hit, so it's definitely not flat. placement is fine, construction looked okay. i just hope that peaceful place to stop and relax doesn't become park central!
