Day 6: Back to the East

Just a quick update as I'm running out. Back visiting in Quebec, The Kid and I headed to Mont-Sainte-Anne for a few runs this morning. It was snowing heavily but didn't amount to more than a couple of inches that constituted the entirety of their natural snow cover. Apparently the bulk of the storm dove south of us thus far, and the wind was howling. One run was open on the North Side, an intermediate cruiser, although they were grooming out manmade on two additional runs on the North Side as well. Cover was edge-to-edge, with the new snow pushed into random piles in many places. Thus shock absorber knees were the most important gear today -- I can't seem to shake my new Western habit of big GS turns, even on Eastern trails that have now become foreign to me.

The Kid was a whiner today, complaining about the rental equipment (they wouldn't let their demos out yet), complaining about the weather (hell, it's snowing!), complaining about anything...resulting in a pissed off father/son wrestling match in the gondola after I snapped. 8-[ Good thing the place was relatively deserted!

No pics or video -- visibility was a half mile at best until we were leaving.

I'll head back up tomorrow to see what another day brings.

Welcome back to the east , see what we have to put up with . Count yourself lucky that you weren't hit by a " Human Missile " ( Like this term Joe ) while you were doing a GS Turn . Have a good trip :)

Snow report said 2 yesterday, it's saying 4 today. Hopefully 4 means 4 runs you can ski. I've noticed that they have two runs under training, would this mean they are closed off to the public?

It would seem that many of us have done through this before, being with kids, spouse or friends. That is why I sometime prefer skiing alone, I really can't stand and have a zero tolerance level for bad vibe on a ski day.

Le Massif would seem like a good place to be today. Top to bottom.

I wish I could get some turns in today, but I'm at home with a sick kid. Edelweiss is the only local area open 7 days a week and is reporting 30cm in the last 48 hours.

Tell me about it. I remember a particular day in blue bird day in wet heavy powder day at Whistler...during our Honeymoon. 8-[

So with November drawing to a close we'll be seeing Patrick's report any day now  .

My best ski days are disproportionately alone. The top 40 (vert + powder) sort out as follows:
13 alone
11 with friend(s) or family but skied less than half the day with them
10 not with friends/family but in an organized group (cat, heli or Extremely Canadian clinic)
6 with friend(s) or family most or all of the day

The cliche "no friends on a powder day" is true most of the time.

We're expecting a full FTO video, of tomorrow events, with credits and the whole deal.

Don't expect much from me, I'm totally swamped. Between post-election work, kids birthday parties (done), bindings shopping (done), sick kids (last two days), car shopping, ski boots shopping, skin shopping, kitchen discussion about a trip to France in 09(?), old family movies transfert for the Holidays, High School reunion planning, wife birthday coming up followed by the Neil Young concert...I was hoping to scan some pics, but I am totally overrun with stuff right now.

It depends who? I know I'm on the same page as Lucky Luke. I probably wouldn't have any issues based on a skiing I've done with River, salida or GPetrics also. Also had a great day with james and Harvey last Spring at Whiteface.

High expectations for today's report!!!   Did he ditch the kid and go skiing non-liftserved skiing today? (Sorry Marc for pulling a Tony on you) :-"

None of the above. I never made it today, but will be there in the a.m.

Not sure what MSA got, but here is one pic from Le Massif today. Earlier today they were saying that they received 41cm in the last 24 hours. It was still snowing tonight here in Ottawa.

As a reference point, on that first snow in October I'd skied, they had reported 34cm. \:D/ \:D/ \:D/

I didn't check MSA today, but it was raining here in Quebec City this a.m. after it turned to sleet early last evening.

I refuse to believe that Patrick's streak will end with a WROD available half an hour from home, particularly after his heroics in bagging July - October this year.

One does wonder what's happening there. There is not even an announcement of a projected opening date.

While I'll readily concede that Patrick has a longer list of worthy ski partners than I, the main issue is that powder shows up on its own schedule, not necessarily when one is best positioned to take advantage. My numerous trips to the Iron Blosam at Snowbird being Exhibit A.

I'd also point out that on the memorable 1/29/06 day at Jackson, Patrick and I were not together most of that day. I'll take the blame for that, as I was too impatient to wait for the infamous camera (the one that took the slide for life at Moonlight Basin) when there was that much pow to be had.

Yes there is - next weekend.

Checked the last 24 hour at the Charlevoix weather station and seen a bit of the Massif discussion on ZS. People don't think that anything else than snow fell.

if you look carefully on the top webcam, you'll see some tracks.

3 of the 4 closest local areas were open last Sunday, the 4th is opening this weekend. Although there is only one run open, the conditions would definitely not be, what Tony calls, the WROD. Everything in the city is covered in white for the last few dates, no freeze-thaw cycle, no sleet or rain, just snow.

No stress here, I have 3 days and I'm leaving for Montreal tomorrow afternoon to go shopping this weekend. I simply said that I probably wouldn't have time to write a TR. :|

As discuss many times, it takes a lot to get a ski area to changed their pre-determined opening and closing dates.

As you recall, you left warp speed at the top of the gondi to go wait in-line at the chair while I explored from fresh and deep trackless snow. That might be why Admin and I count some of our powder days above 90% and you don't.

OK I admit it I don't know what WROD is. Help please?

White
Ribbon
Of
Death

Narrow manmade snow trail in early or late season that allows skiing or sliding. Many areas start off operations that way before mother-nature kicks in.
