A free lift ticket voucher for going to see the Warren Miller film in November needed to be used by the end of this weekend at Mt Snow. Haven't been to Mt Snow since I was 15 years old with my HS ski club. Being that it's been over 25 yrs, it was like skiing a new mountain to me.
It was sunny and a chilly 5 degrees at 8am when we pulled up to a close-up parking spot near the base lodge. Mt Snow laid down some nice product, and the skiing on all the open trails made for some excellent high speed cruising.
Two trails were open on the North Face. Both firm and fast, yet carveable at the beginning as well as the end of the day. We scoped out the woods in this area, and found that the cover was insufficient and the snow surface consisted of shards of ice that had fallen off the trees from the previous week's ice storm. Not a nice ski surface.
The Main face was mostly blue cruisers, with excellent snow. We veered towards Sunbrook to warm up in the sunshine. This took us over to Bear Trap, which is a short lift on a somewhat steeper (by Mt Snow standards) southfacing slope that had some fresh manmade ungroomed snow on it. This was the most interesting trail we skied, with the best snow. Bumps were beginning to form, and the sunshine warmed up the snow improving its softness. Laps took less than 5 minutes including the lift ride. We did a few. I would guess that this trail/lift may be less than 400 vertical feet. Short and sweet.
We skied over to the Carinthia area and found a skiable glade called Claim Jumper. Cover was thin, and the skiing marginal, but it sure was a nice diversion from the smooth and groomed, which was everywhere but on Bear Trap. We ended up doing more laps back at Bear Trap.
I'll post some pictures tomorrow. My camera is still in the pocket of my ski jacket.
