Mt. Rose - 2/11/05

Blue skies and temps in the 30s. Typical California day. The snow was a bit firm, but very easy to carve.

The Chutes.
These are the real deal. They reminded me of Squaw's KT22 - a little more narrow and not quite as steep. I liked the Chutes much bettter than Heavenly's Mott/Killibrew Canyons - primarily because these areas at Heavenly are difficult to access without a lot of traversing.

There are about 3 minor peaks which chutes cascading down from them (the paths in the saddles were a lot easier then the paths directly from a peak). I was afraid all the chutes would ski the same -- they don't. Also, only experts were in this area - no one was there by mistake. A lot of people would look over the edge and turn around.

I didn't mind taking 2 lifts to get back to the Chutes. The new Slide side 6-pack is super fast. Also, they run the feeder lift out of the Chutes fast and few people cause it stop. Maybe a 10 minute loop? Not bad.

Slide Peak Side Express
Combined with the Northwest Express -- you can really rack up vertical now at Mt. Rose. The Slide side is more interesting than the original side - so this is a good development.

Original Mt. Rose Side
I still think the runs feel all too similar. All are groomed. All a little narrow to medium width.

I really like Mt. Rose a lot better now. The Chutes and the new HS 6pack really bring the mountain to a new level.

Interesting, Chris...thanks. The Slide side was actually a bit neglected when I was there a few years back, or at least it seemed that way. And IIRC, history-wise the Slide side was actually first, the "original" side. One thing I do recall for sure: they were once two separate ski areas, believe it or not.

I remember looking at those chutes and thinking, "What if..."

I thought Mt. Rose bought out Slide? I skied Mt. Rose once in 80s when they were not connected.

I didn't pay attenetion to how they are marketing them now.

Anyways, they have moved the terrain park over to the Slide side -- and with the new 6-pack -- this side was a lot more popular. All for the better.

Correct, they did buy out Slide, but IIRC Slide pre-dated Rose. Could be proven wrong, though.
