Mt. Waterman Pictures!! (Summer Hike)

First off, thanks Marc for the warm welcome. Since this board seems to have some pretty cool and friendly people posting, I will definitely be posting in the future. I've been skiing and then snowboarding since I was about 4 years old. I don't have nearly as much time to do it as I did when I was younger, but it is still very close to my heart.

Anyways, since people were talking about Waterman, I thought I'd share some pictures of Waterman in the summertime. I hiked up to the top from the base at chair 1. I got some pretty cool pictures of a few runs and some cool looking vintage chair lifts.

There is also a panorama shot that I pieced together in photoshop from 3 different shots. It took me the better part of an hour to get it looking right, but I'm pretty pleased with the outcome.

If anybody else around here has pictures of Waterman, or places like Krakta Ridge, Mt Baldy, Snow Forest, Ski Green Valley, Buckhorn, or Ski Sunrise, please post them!! I'd love to see some of the places I didn't get a chance to ski or ride as well as some pics of the places I love the best around here.

I'm more interested in pics of the actual runs and the mountain. It's cool to see people skiing and such, but I really like it when I can see the whole (or parts of) a mountain.

Anyways, enjoy!

The chair 1 pics do not convey well the steepness of the runs. You East Coast bumpers would LOVE Waterman's chair 1. A year ago I drove up the Angeles Crest in a futile attempt to see a just-after-sunset lunar eclipse. Clouded out, just like 2 weeks ago. I kicked myself for not bringing the camera, as Waterman had a thin cover of about 3 inches snow. If you stop about 1/4 mile short of the area, you have a panoramic view of the perfectly gladed backcountry dropping back to the highway. I rarely had any trouble thumbing a ride back to the lift when I skied out there. But that was before the CHP started hassling the backcountry skiers a few years back, probably during El Nino 1998.

Oh yeah, the first view you get of Waterman from HWY 2, right when you drive up is that one face run which is seriously like at a 60 degree angle. Well maybe not, but it looks very steep, like you would just fall off the run if you didn't catch every turn really hard.

Yeah, I should have gotten that base photo, but the hiking trail we took started somewhere inbetween Krakta and Waterman, a mile or two up the road, on the right hand side. It criss crosses all the way up until you reach the mid point of Waterman, near where the lodge is. Unfortunately, it's extremely hard to hike down those steep face runs, or I would have gotten that base pic.

I found some ski pics of Mt. Waterman's face from February 1992 and scanned them. There had been numerous storms over the previous month, so the bumps were not as deep as usual.
