SkiTalk group was going to Mt Rose for 2fer Tuesday, but I never committed to join them. Many of them backed out due to pass between Incline Village and ski area remaining closed in AM (and they were staying at Tahoe or Palisades) and no hope for Chutes to open with 8’ of new snow. We went to Northstar as that is where telemarking surgeon friend whose right leg is suffering from effects of shingles (get your vaccine) wanted to go and he agreed to ski with my wife who went from joining me on 0 to 5 to 14 days of my trip to stay at his new 6400’ house N of Truckee. It cost me $159 (and both of us a long walk from E parking to Village ticket office) for Buddy pass to get Lucia back on skis 2 years and almost 2 months after crash due to binding malfunction that led to her getting holes drilled in her head 3 weeks later to relieve pressure from subdural bleeding.
We loaded Village gondola at 9:15, then met friend at Arrow and skied perfectly groomed beginner run before moving up to Comstock and skiing intermediate West Ridge and Luggi’s. Line was building at Comstock 6-pack so we moved to Vista that I would end up skiing and riding 10 times. This is Lucia on The Straights.
Around noon we rode Zephyr and found Drifter, the run from Tamarack Lodge to the Backside (which had been closed since Friday PM) was open. They skied the narrowly groomed run while I went to left and skied trees joining them in short line from East to load chair. There was no line from the West. They went to lodge at top to use facilities while I followed rope line that I saw 50-100 people duck to find where legal entry to Backside was. Above not running Promised Land chair, I couldn’t resist ducking rope for more than 500’ of untracked deep and decent powder. I then followed traverse to left past Backside chair and caught more untracked in lower half of Monument Glades. They were slow opening at top, but now allowed access into Burn Out, just to right at top and I traversed across Monument Glades skiing a lot of powder into untracked Follow Me, which has a short steep face that was barely tracked and skied well.
Line had grown to more than 10 minutes so I left the Backside to ski Vista with another Truckee friend. We went into Sawmill Glades once and skied between Hornets Nest and Cats Face at least four times, finding some good short untracked stretches.
My friend left and I returned to the Backside for one more lap about 3, finding line and untracked snow mostly gone. I skied over downed rope into Home Run, finding some powder above it and quit at 3:15 with 26K. Lookout never opened and Northstar seemed to be very slow getting lifts going after storm for a place with very little avalanche danger.
