Planned opening days - Continued

As Lftgly said, this thread was a little bit long to load. (even on the high-speed internet)

So very interesting analysis, Lftgly !

I would just add one thing. The snowmaking that they do, in october, they don't really lose money on this, cause they would have to make this snow later, in november, to open those trails, if they were not opening in october. OK, it's sure they would need less snow, but this should be counted in the analysys.

But as I said before, Killington is just not the right ski area to open early, anymore in the East.

Back on the original conversation :

Massif du Sud : december 12
Massif : december 12

(they really like to be thought like 1 unique resort ! lol)

November 11th of last year saw a recorded temperature of 70F in Rutland according to weather records, yet all the snow did not melt at once. When should we start skiing? in January? There was consistent cold weather this year between the 16th-20th of October to allow for snowmaking at Killington peak. To be sure there were warm periods after this, but for Killington to think that they can offer top to bottom skiing from the start every October is pure fantasy. It is also a letdown for loyal customer(myself included) of Killington who came to expect(any) early season skiing, no matter how limited.

A thing that I seriously didn't like this year is the fact that on october 3, when they made snow, they said they were going to open at very short term. (I wasn't believing them, though). After, they said they were anticipating to open on mid-october. After, they changed for late-october and now, it's early november.

So c'mon, what is the joke to make us drool and after to always delay our chance to ski ? They should be fair with their customers, if they don't want to lose them. We wouldn't have complained that much, if they'd first said that they would open on early november (and if they effectively did it). This would have been sad, but fair.

Frankontour:

Whats your opinion on a vacation destination for January 2004, Sugarloaf or Smugglers? Right now I can't decide, but if Killington does not open before Santa Claus comes, what will Sugarloaf be like? The new trails and increased snowmaking at the loaf sound apealing. Decisions, decisions.

Don't you worry, Kevin, Killington will open on maximum november 10. So I expect to see Mt Saint-Sauveur open the same week.

January 2004 : it's tough to predict where the snow will fall this winter. On my side, I think I would prefer Sugarloaf, cause the crowds are surely not really big, with 350K skiers by year for a mountain like that and it looks very amazing for skiing.

For Smuggs, all the interesting terrain was closed when I went there several years ago, but I already hiked the Doc Dempsey's glade + Upper FIS, in summer, and I think that these trails are not sure to be open in early jan 2004 (like the Liftline, Robin's, Black Hole, Freefall), while there is surely some super trails at the Loaf that will be open at this moment, cause they are more numerous. I don't know for the woods, though !

Finally... having not skied them both (I won't call "ski" what I did at Smuggs in jan 96), I'm not sure that my opinion has a big worth for you ;)

Frankontour, FYI MSS was featured in the latest MatchStick Productions ski movie called Focused. It was just a short rail segment with Mont St Sauveur in big letters on the side.

Thanks for the info, Anonymous !

I didn't know that they'd done a part of a movie this year, in the Laurentians. (even a little part)

I think that the only "normal movie" related to skiing that have been filmed in the Laurentians was "Snowboard Academy" with Jim Varney, in 1996, at Le Chantecler and Tremblant... + somewhere in the west too.

75F on AVERAGE THIS MONTH???????????? WHERE???

I haven't checked what the temps were in Killington in October, but as I mentioned previously, temps in Ottawa haven't reached 75F in a while, let alone being the average.

There is some average/historical data for temps and snowfall on the top of Mt.Mansfield. This info would be useful right now. I believe it is on the Ski-Vt website (my link no longer works).

About Killington losing potential skier by cutting the edge of the season, I am one of them. Some of the blame goes to global warming, but some of it also to K for changing it policy in blowing less snow. I am not saying this is Good or Bad, but Please let's stop with the rosy Press Release (ie. Disturbing Trends).

Here are my stats for Killington from 1983-84 to 2002-3. Skied 44 days (#3: ski days per resort). Day skied after May 17: 28 days, 8 of those in June (92 to 97). 63% of all my ski days at Killington where done after mid-May.

In the last 6 seasons, since June 15, 1997, I have skiied Killington only 3 times - all of them in mid-May. No, I haven't done this on purpose - it just happened that way. I believe that Killington might be losing the die-hard day skier willing to drive 3 hours or more for snow, cause they are no longer really the only game in town in the late season because of the earlier closing.

But I am sure they don't really care about me 'cause I am not a big spender. I have skied Killington mostly on day trip and rarely bought a lunch.

Once forgot.

I was at the Ottawa Ski Snow on Saturday. Talked to the K and MSS guys about (what we want to know) "When are you guys opening?"

Answer from MSS rep: "Probably next weekend"

Answer from K rep: "This weekend" (I guess, he meant this coming weeknd)

Here on Long Island (down in the tropics) the highest temperature for this month was 77F on October 8th. The National Weather Service recorded a record low temperature on October 24th of 31F at Islip N.Y. The previous day saw scattered snow showers on parts on the island!! Friday night October 25th saw teperatures well down into the
20's. And this is with water temperature's in the atlantic in the lower 60's range. With these strong cold fronts it must have been cold enough to make snow in Vermont during the month. The extended forecast does not look promising for snowmaking into next week.
