Plattekill

I read the recent article about the Plattekill double, and I hope their plans works. This is a gem of a mountain with true, down the mountain vertical and legitimate expert terrain. No trails cut into the mountain across the natural fall line. No steep drop at top followed by boring intermediate to the bottom. This is the real deal, at least as far as mountains south of the mohawk valley are concerned (i.e. south ofthe Addirondaks, Greens or Whites).The double will provide better and more comfortable access to the best of this terrain. If they can throw in some more snowmaking, they'd have a good chance of getting some people from other mountains (though they might not want them). <BR> <BR>Best of luck. I only wish I had enough time to justify the deal their offering. But I'll do my part by driving by the other three areas on my way to the big P.

Yes, this is and ooold conversation, but now that we talk of this mountain, I would like to know if someone here have pics of it ? It looks to be a really steep mountain and I would like to have some views of the left extreme trails + Blockbuster (if I remember correctly). Some plunging views or pics from bottom... or simply the whole mountain.

I've never skied there, but I have mt. biked it... short, but steep. It's incredibly popular for that (much more than for skiing). When I was there last summer, the parking lot was absolutely filled with hard-core cyclists. It has a reputation as one of the best downhill mtb areas in the East.

Wow, a ski area more popular for mountain biking than skiing... it's not something really usual ! <BR> <BR>I admit that mountain biking could be an interesting way for 4 seasons ski areas. The problem is that there is less mountain bikers than skiers... <BR> <BR>Here, we have Ski Bromont that have a very big part of the market of mountain bike. Tremblant tried to compete them, but they had to stop, few years after, cause it was too dangerous, with all the hikers and it was probalby not profitable anyway. <BR> <BR>Bromont is really a big mountain for that... just see the bike trail map. There is also a waterpark. They're becoming one of the most profitable ski area here... just with the 600 000 ski visits last year + bike and waterpark in summer... <BR> <BR><A HREF="http://www.skibromont.com/cartevelo.html" TARGET="_top">http://www.skibromont.com/cartevelo.html</A>

Bromont is, oddly enough, another ski area that I've mountain biked, but not skied! It is similar to Plattekill in that they both share 1,000 ft. verticals and attract a lot of downhill mt. bikers in the summer. I remember Bromont's tagline when I was there: "Sale Plaisir." <BR> <BR>During the winter, however, Bromont does much much better due to its proximity to Montreal and its popular night skiing, while Plattekill is a solid two-hour drive from NYC, and only open Friday through Sunday.

(let's say 1300' for Bromont... that's an enough big difference, here) <BR> <BR>About night skiing, you said it !!! This year, they almost got 2x more night skiers than day skiers... it's incredible ! Just thinking the comparison : Sugarloaf ±350K skiers with ±15 lifts... and Bromont : 600K skiers with 4 lifts, don't wonder why you won't see me there in the next years ! (crowds were often over 25 minutes in <B>mid-week</B>, last year)
