Powder morning Greek Peak 3/1/05

Wow, what a nice morning. 6-8" of new snow and has been snowing non-stop.

I called in late and went to Greek Peak for a dozen powder runs, 10 of them untracked.

Lifts open at 9:30. Got on line at 9:20. About 15 people ahead of me. Already ditched some friends who were waiting for others to arrive. No friends on a powder day. Rode up the lift with another friend, a tele-skier/ ice&rock climber/kayaker, from England. At the top, the ski patrol was directing people away from 3 closed runs. They were closed for grooming, oh the horror! So you had to turn right and skate over to Iliad, Odyssey or Olympian. I couldn't believe that they would not let us ski all that fresh powder and kept it from us so they could groom it. Blasphemy!

I got freshies on Iliad. Second run went to Olympian, the steepest trail at Greek Peak. It was quite tracked by the time I got there, and beneath the fluff was a very firm base. Definitely a disappointment.

I decided to head to the other side of the area, which was kinda tricky given the closed trails. This was actually very nice b/c it kept most people on Iliad/Odyssey/Olympian. I took Epicurus, which is a flat green traverse trail that requires some skating but and it was closed until 3pm. I got first tracks in the bottom 3/4 of the glade. Sweet!!! This is a big glade and freshies would last for a while, so I decided to move on and come back later.

Rode Chair 4 and got first tracks on Zeus skiers left, twice! (first the left line, then the very left line). Most people ski the right side which is flat. The left line has some nice definition, and nice big bumps covered with fresh untracked snow was quite delicious. People kept following me. The 3rd lift ride I noticed that it was getting quite tracked out, so it was time to move on to Chair 5 and Alsops glade and Arethusa Way off Mars Hill.

I passed a posse of teenage male skiers/boarders as they got off the lift. Luckily they had to stop to strap in. I got the woods to myself and there was a ton of fresh in there to be had. I came out on Mars Hill and snuck over to Arethusa for the grand finale...a nice steep shot below Chair 5, untracked with nice moguls. Woohoo. As I rode up the lift, the teenage posse tracked up the same route I had taken. Glad I got there first. There was still a little left to track up so I did a couple of laps there before heading back to see if anyone else had dropped into Aesop's Glade.

Got back to Chair 1a, the slowest chair in the world. My butt was a bit frozen from sitting on snow all morning. I got off and skated over through the woods to get to Aesops. People had been in there, but not too many. Lots of fresh lines. I would have gone back to ski it again, but I told work I'd be there by noon. I was only 15 minutes late. Great morning, and it is still snowing and is supposed to keep snowing throughout the week.
