The first of what is hopefully 2 road trips this year. Left Oshawa, ON at 4:45 am Sunday, skied Burke Sunday afternoon. ($18pp) Setup base at Woodwards in Lincoln, NH - taking advantage of the $250, 7 day midweek pass.
Monday was Waterville Valley (2 for 1) - Sunny but cold. Trails on the north side were icy so we skied mostly off the Sunnyside chair. This also kept us mostly out of the wind. Extra entertainment was watching boarders sliding/falling off the icy top section of True Grit. Saw one that decided to slide down 1000' head first, with his legs bent and board in the air. Shame I didn't get a video of that. Here's a shot of my wife at the top.
Tuesday was Cannon (2 for 1) - still cold but cloudy. The place was practically empty. Here's a shot about half way down upper hardscrabble. The run lived up to it's name - got some new nicks in the bases!
Wednesday - left Lincoln around 8AM - just starting to snow. Plan was Wildcat (2 for 1) but by the time we got the other side of Franconia Notch it was snowing so hard that we bailed and ended up at Bretton Woods. (also 2 for 1) Great day - cold, snowing about an inch an hour. Hero snow - light, fluffy, filling in the tracks throughout the day. At times it was blowing almost sideways.
Thursday was back to Cannon (2 for 1). Powder down lower on the Zoomer side with wind blown crust as you went higher up the mountain. Got major wide/fat ski envy - hard to justify powder skis for the 300' hills that are almost always groomed out back in Ontario. Must of had some school closings as it got positively crowded by about 11 am. Ended up leaving early since both my wife & I could "feel the burn" and figured no sense getting injured.
Friday - ckecking out early (7:15) Drove over to Waterbury,Vt to pick up some Cabot cheese and Green Mountain Roasters coffee to take home. Had a 2 for 1 coupon for Bolton from the Toronto ski show - cashed that in and skied Bolton from 10 to 2. Nice mountain - never been there before. We stopped at the first lodge (Timberline) only to find out they weren't selling tickets there. Liftie was kind enough to let us go up and ski over to the main lodge to buy our tickets. The mountain got busy with school groups around lunch time. Managed to get into a couple of the glades. Interesting that there was no crust in the deeper stuff, unlike parts of Cannon on the previous day. Clouds broke up briefly so I snapped a pic of my wife somewhere on Cobrass. (By the way, how do you pronounce that?)
Packed up and sadly headed home to the flat lands of Ontario via upstate NY. Total distance travelled for the week - 1193.6 miles. With the inexpensive accomodation and skiing 2 for 1 all week the average price per person / per night to ski and stay comes in under $60 US per day. Scarey part is that I still have 2 nights of midweek lodging available to me in Lincoln, plus 2 free Jay tickets (cashed in Air Miles and didn't use the tickets) plus another 2 for 1 Bolton coupon. Will have to see how the cash flow situation is and what the spring conditions are like this year.
Till then I'll continue to live vicariously through the posts on this site!
