Runnin' up to Cannon...

I'm in North Lincoln and I'm jetting up to Cannon right now to see what the hell it all looks like. will report back in a bit!

Definitely intersted to know how it's looking now.

Here's how it was yesterday:
The Sunday/Monday rain took its toll. Lot's of cover was lost, and what remained became a solid block when the temps dropped.

BUT!!!!! Then they picked up ~6-8 of fresh from Monday evening through early Tuesday morning. Conditions were excellent at the start of the day, with only about 50% of the mountain groomed. Fresh lines were still to be found as of 4pm although it took a little more searching (and more branches the face). For a vaction week the place was dead. Never stood in a line all day and the tram was never a wait.

A sampling of conditions:
- Vistaway: Skiers left had a 20' wide line of super soft. A wind packed ridge ran on the outside of the goods, making a good buffer from the rest of the trail which was super-boney.
- Paulie's extension: Closed. and as a result had some of the freshest and softest lines on the hill. While I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was smart to have it closed as many a rock lurked underneath. I was lucky to have only moderate base damage.
-Zoomer, Rocket, Gary's, Paulie's: All good. Lot's of soft lines to be found near the trees. The middle looked to be skied off and scratchy by the end of the day.
-Avalanche, Banshee, Jasper's: All soft. Avalanche was getting thin late in the day but still soft. The others were saw very little use and still had fresh lines at day's end.
- Ravine, Taft, Skylight, Profile: All closed, with snowmaking in progress. I did not check any of them out. Profile looked wind scoured down to the frozen wetness from the day before. I was very surprised that they had the cannonball running considering all of this was closed.

I would imagine this morning was decent. Probably heavily groomed to blend the pow and i**. Unfortunately this weeks weather could be a serious setback.

not too bad...

first time up, i rode w/ some patrollers on the upper quad.. recommended taft, and it was damned nice. and then a big magnet kept me left and i wound up taking a walk. the 'chute' before the old lift was in pretty solid shape, and from there, i took Baron's. The snow was a-plenty, but heavy stuff. lots of untracked snow, but it was work. Next run I hit the Hardscrabbles, which were similarly heavy work but fun fun fun. Vista was had great stashes but deteriorated to a skeleton at the bottom (and I *love* picking lines through, um, well... crud  )

Middle Cannon as its usual self, but sticking all the way to the right provided enough to make turns whenver necessary. Avalanche was great, IMO. big soft heavy pillow bumps. they just opened Paulies and Avalanche yesterday, from what I was told, so they weren't skied off at all.

So overall a good bunch of runs, but some cranking work, and I tweaked my back on a binding pop on Mid-Hardscrabble (following on the DIN thread earlier, I'm crankin' 'em up).

I didn't cover everything as some of it was going to repeat what Cannonball reported... leeme know if anyone wants to know anything specific...

The storm is likely going to get 'em all though. DOH. I'm happy to have got in some turns while they're available... and to have visited dear Mitt for what I hope to be the first of umpteen times this season.

Pray for some weirdness to turn all this stuff to fluff,

Mike

boilerplate on vista. quick short turns on the sides all over the hill was ok, but does a number on the legs. soft bumps are on avalanche and right side of lower zoom zoom. zoomer lift line has potential, but ice mogul ice mogul kind of riding. cut off or whatever it's called is roped, but powder can be found in there too. i never got over to mittersill and have yet to get the time to size my pictures down to post. cannon is a fun little hill, but need sharp edges. it was dead last friday. opened the top up on saturday or sunday. today was a zoo. nice temps though (low 30's i think) and a fun day on the hill. i'll get some pics up once i have the chance. it's busy

looks like either the Cat or Sunday River in a couple of days. anyone hear anything about the Cat? riding well? is it worth $40?

Pouring rain as I drove through the notch today at around 4PM. Brown spots showing on Zoomer and other face trails. And the rain continued for some time.

That rain I wrote of on the 29th turned to 7-8 inches of new snow by the next morning. Heard Cannon's skiing has been all right since.
