My wife and I had to be in East Stroudsburg, PA yesterday, about an hour from home, so with our Indy Passes in hand, we headed over to Shawnee near the Delaware Water Gap for a couple hours. For an early Friday afternoon there were more people around than I expected, but the high-speed quad was ski-on and the layout did a good job dispersing whomever was there. On most runs, we rarely skied past anyone.

It was a good reminder of what a solid beginner/feeder hill Shawnee is, with several mellow, consistently-pitched routes down its roughly 700 feet of vertical. A foot of snow is forecast with the upcoming storm, but conditions yesterday leaned toward scratchy boilerplate. Even so, we managed to find a couple of blue runs where there was nice soft snow on the skier’s left, and we kept lapping those lines.

My wife was happy that I grabbed a few photos showing that she'd gotten her on-piste legs back after a long break from skiing:

Old-school ticket wickets:

Also spotted a Wrangler jean-and-fleece jacket that I hadn’t seen in decades. I wore a Levi’s version back in high school:

Around 4 p.m. we stopped at a nearby pub I’d been to once before after playing this course:

It’s easy to goof on the handful of snowmaking-dependent ski hills close to home, but if you (a) hit them outside peak times, (b) manage to find a few trails in decent shape, and (c) go somewhere "gemütlich" (cozy/comfortable) for a drink and nibbles on the way home, they make for a nice couples outing and certainly better than sitting at home.
