Last run for 2004!
Trail conditions are still good despite the r@!n they got. Waterbars are still an issue at the bottom 1/3. Snow quality was a little less desireable than two weeks ago but it was still good. A little crunchy in places but no real big stretches of ice or rock(except in the troughs of waterbars down low).Temps were in the low 20's at Hermit Lake with NO WIND!
Hillmans looks good up top but the bottom is still brushy,Lower Snowfields needs more snow,Dodges and Dutchess are still a long way off,Little Headwall looked frozen but not filled in,Left Gully looked real good,Chute was skiable,Headwall was still rocky,Sluice was filling in but still kind of narrow,Right looked good but from Hermit Lake it's hard to see, and Right Right was obsured from view.
Now i've been sliding the Sherburne for 12-15 years now, skiing it for 20 and have had hundreds of people compliment me on my sled.I've always respected the trail as I am a skier first and sledder second.During some snow conditions a very small amount of walking is reqired to reach enough of a pitch to get moving. As a skier I understand walking on the trail is taboo and I respect that.I always stay as far to the edge as possible and if there is a buddy with me we walk in each others tracks to minimize the impact. Today I had to walk about 20' during the entire descent.
Today I met the anti-sledder. We were suiting up on the HoJo's deck when he looks over and says"you're not thinking of going down the ski trail with that, are you?" I respond politely"Why yes, there is no sliding allowed on the Tuckerman Ravine Trail."
Well that's all that guy needed to hear.He went of on a rant about how the Sherby is a Ski trail and there is no walking on it.Sledding is not allowed on it.And just in general being a beligerant jerk on a beautiful day.
Well I stood my ground and called his bluff.I've slid the Sherby 150+ times, right past snow rangers, forest rangers,AMC staff, volunteer ski patrol, you name it.I've talked to Brad Ray and Chris Joosen about sliding the trail and they had no ill words. On the contrary they were very interested and wished me well.
The guy almost got a knuckle sandwich, not because he was trying to tell me his point of view, it was his condesending tone and know-it-all attitude.I'll listen to anyone's opinion and love a good debate, just dont be a jerk.
Regardless, I swallowed a bit of pride and just let him go on his way.Ok,well I just couldn't resist letting him get a two minute head start and then I hit the trail and blew by him near the lower cache and beat him to the bottom!
