Ski competition on August 30.

Oh yeah !! ... this year again, Mont Saint-Sauveur comes back with his little ski competition at the end of august. Last year, I just attend few minutes to the competition, but I found it extremely cool, especially for august !!

I hope it will be a great day, like last year. Ok, this is not the place for large slalom, but it's quite funny to see them take the air ... to finish in the pool !

In 2001, the track was quite narrow compared to last year, but looked funny.

2002... it was really cool !!!

I'm eager to see (and take) pics, for 2003 !!

If some of you are interested to see that, MSS is 35 minutes north of Montreal on I-15. You can see the website : http://www.parcaquatique.com for details (the website is bilingual)

Frank, you're five stars on this board! Great photos of the '01 slalom; half-hour north of Montreal is a bit far for me; maybe Dan Egan will get the hint and run a similar event for Labor Day weekend. Is there a pond at Tenney? Here at Cannon, we ski right off the bottom of Rocket into Echo Lake (but it'll be a cold day in November before Cannon makes snow)!

I remember one year (early 80s) in August(?), in Summer anyways, that there was some type of competition like this in Montreal. No pool. If anyone can believe it, the race was held on St.Denis street between Sherbrooke and Ontario Sts. in Downtown Montreal. (No, it was not part of the Just for Laughts Festival or any other).

For those who don't know Montreal, this section of St.Denis street has many bars and restaurant. The slight pitch after Sherbrooke and ends at Ontario.

I can't remember if it was long the event lasted. One to Three years is my best guess. I am not sure if this event is not directly related and moved to the present event in St.Sauveur?

LOL Patrick, I didn't know that. I'm too young anyway to have seen that as I began skiing in january 1988.

I don't remember exactly how the pitch is on St-Denis, but it's true that there is certainly a good ... hmm... 50' high at least lol

I don't know if the MSS event is the following of the Montreal event.

Thanks Lftgly You know, if 5-6 turns are not too far for me in tucks in august... if Tenney wasn't too far for me before they cancelled, Franconia is not too far from St-Sauveur ! hihihi. No, I'm laughing, but it's a good idea to send a link or the pic to Dan Eagan. He has the technology more than St-Sauveur and could make a decent run enough easily, I guess. For the pond, I don't think there is a lake near the snowmagic installations, but they could do an artificial pond and avoid the aerial maneuvers into the lake. Oh, talking of that, there is actually a place to do that near Montreal, in St-Hypollite. I've seen it 4-5 years ago. It's 2 different practice ramps for acroski. There is a pond and there was few guys practicing when we went. It was really cool to see. (although not on snow)

And for Cannon... brrrrr, november into the lake. It looks quite a bit cold. Almost need a wetsuit !

For the race on St.Denis street. I don't think it started at Sherbrooke St, but much lower. There was maybe 10 to 20 tight gates from what I remember seeing on the news 20 years ago. So the lenght of it was more like the bottom half of St.Denis before Ontario St. (not the steepest upper part).

I curiously passed by there, today (in fact, we turned on St-Denis / Sherbrooke). The slope may be near 60' high I think and is not far of the steepness of an intermediate trail.

My brother-in-law think to have pics from this old event.

Good question !

I already asked the question to Christian Dufour (which is now GM of Mt Gabriel) and he told me it was a secret. It's not exactly some ice rink snow, according to what he excluded of my guesses.

Last year, I've easily seen that they'd removed a lot of snow from the West 70, after the closure. It was the same thing this year. There was monster jump hill on the lower part of the trail and 6 days later, there was nothing remaining. So I think at the moment they decide to close, they put it in a freezer room where they can even possibly blow some snow, a little bit like snowmagic. May be it's not that at all neither, but it's quite weird how the snow amount seem to have decreased fast, at the end of the 2 last seasons, only at the bottom of mountain, while the upper part was still perfectly skiable.

I think I remember hearing that they got the snow from... St-Sauveur, thus the possible connections. I know, it doesn't make much sense, driving 60km (40 miles), especially if the truck(s) get stucked in traffic on the Metropolitain Highway!!!

More or less on the same subject (competition in Montreal).

Do you remember the World Cup Aerial event in Montreal (late 80s). This was gone before the move to Tremblant from Mt.Gabriel. There wasn't enough snow for the jump and landing area so they rerouted snow removal trucks from dumping in a landfill and yes, the St.Lawrence River to dump the snow on the slope. (Montreal had an environmental exemption for x amout of years). The snow wasn't exactly white. Initially, this event was suppose to World Cup circuit, however that was changed. I believe there must have been a few protest from teams.
The event was at the University of Montreal old ski hill, the jumps were next to the run where there is sharp drop. The skier ended on the Football field, with the stands in front of them.
The Stadium set up (Stade d'hiver = Winter Stadium) has stands on one side and the mountain on the order side of the field.

I remember about Mt Gabriel, but not in Montreal. Do you know the old ski trail of the Montreal's University is still skiable during winter ? I've seen some snowboarders doing some jumps on the hill winter 2001. (that was a big winter, ok). It looks like Mt Gabriel never come back of that decision to move to Tremblant. They closed that whole side of mountain, since that time. Last year, to bring more people on the mountain, the lift tickets were 25% lower than on any other decent mountains in the Laurentians. 27$ for an adult a saturday against an average near 35$ for ski areas like that. 15$ for everyone on mid-week and evenings. If I knew that, I think I would have skied it before April 18 (closed for 2 weeks) as it remains a ski area with an interesting terrain. (O'Connell + Coupe du Monde for the bumps), 3 glades, 1 nice narrow drop off and few other stuff.

Anyway, for the ski track in Montreal, I admit it was certainly not really white ! hahahaha

It happened one year, if I remember correctly it might have been a night competition (ouch for the aerial).

The fact that it didn't count for the WorldCup circuit due to the condition of the slope and being held in a none ski area probably determined that it was too much a nightmare to organise to try again. The Outremont residents probably didn't enjoyed it much.

It wasn't even on the old ski runs, it was on the left side when you look at the hill (small cliff - not the real cliff). From what I recall the landing area would have been close to the 20-25 yards line (east side of the Football field).

I have seem the odd snowboarder when I was in University (85-93).

Talking about that hill, did you know there was a major project (circa 1987) to re-open the area and add something like two quads and snowmaking. Needless to say, the Outremont people got scared and made sure it didn't happened. A T-Bar would have been fine. It was okay before. BTW, it was much better than Mt.Laval (56m vertical (half of Rigaud) compared to 18m!!!)*1979-80 numbers

I have over 56m for vertical on my 1972 ski guide. I have 79 meters and looking to the trail, I think this could be a better indication than 56m ?? It's sure that skiing down the street Vincent D'Indy, you probably catch the 100m high !

Making 2 quads there would have been ridiculous I think. It's 2x less high than St-Bruno which is already less than a hill.

But if there was a t-bar (or even 1 double chairlift), it would be cool. the university where I study is just at 1 mile from the old ski area, so it should be cool to fly there between 2 courses
