Ski jobs and the endless winter

Hey!

Firstly I'd like to thank you on making such a great site. I've spent hours reading the stories from Canada and the US, ski instruction and some of the features - they are fab!

Anyway, I live in sunny Australia. It's our winter now (but not too much snow!) so I've been getting my skiing fix here (your site) rather then forking out $70 to go skiing at a resort with only 40% runs open! I finish school next year and was looking at spending a year working at a ski resort in Canada or the US (Dec-April) and then moving to New Zealand for their winter season (I've been to Mt Hutt once at it was great!). I've been looking at many of the different resorts websites and their employment oppertunites. I wondered if any of your staff have worked at a ski resort and if so, what was it like? how hard was it to get the job? any useful tips? etc.. I think this could make a great article as I'm sure there are a lot of avid ski readers out there that would like to learn how to work and ski 7 days a week!

If you know any good sites that might have this information could you please email me them? I've been to several but none have been as large or as comprehensive as yours.

Thanks and may the white stuff be plentiful!

~Andy
Canberra, Australia

First of all, thanks for the kudos. We aim to please.

Regarding your request, you're better off looking at sites dedicated to resort employment. Cool Works is located at http://www.coolworks.com/ , and not only does it list jobs at ski resorts, but also national parks, resorts & lodges, etc. Resort Jobs, located at http://www.resortjobs.com/ , offers a similar service.

Here in the U.S., there's a special seasonal worker visa that's relatively easy to obtain from our Immigration and Naturalization Service. If I remember correctly, it allows for a stay in the country with work permission for a period of 3 months. Not sure off the top of my head regarding Canada, but I believe that there's a similar program in place - especially when you notice all of the Aussies and Kiwis working there. Perhaps someone with greater knowledge on the subject can respond.

I personally spent 8 years as a ski patroller. That's not exactly ideal for your situation, as it generally requires a season's-worth of training. Something like a liftie, guest services employee, or hospitality employee would be easier to pull off. A good friend spent a year in Alta working in maintenance at one of the lodges. Generally, resorts are so desperate for good help that I wouldn't imagine that a position would be too difficult to obtain.

Good luck in your search!
