I hemmed and hawed Friday night on whether to chance a drive into the heart of 38" of lake effect with my "no" season radial tires. The decision was ney, though I knew it would have been a big yeah if I could have made it. Man, I miss my Blizzaks. I'm working on picking up a Subaru. Subaru + Blizzaks = bring it on! I skied Greek for my first outing of the season Saturday. I lapped the one open trail, Fields, oh and Stoic, I passed on the bunny hill and magic carpet. Come on down, we've got four trails open for your skiing enjoyment. When the hoards returned from their lunch break, I called it a day. Too much traffic for one trail. All in all, it was an enjoyable day. The sun was out all day and the "snow" wasn't half bad, no ice at all. The parking lot was a different story.
So, this morning I had a decision to make. Back to Greek, or a 280 mile round trip for sloppy seconds at Snow Ridge. Judging from Powderqueen's TR on Greek, I definitely made the right decision. This was my first trip to Snow Ridge. I was pleasantly surprised. With only 500ft of vertical, I was expecting it to be a lot like Labrador. Greek may have almost twice the vert, but most of the trails there are fairly steep at the top of the hill but level out for the majority of the run. Snow Ridge has a consistent slope from top to bottom. So in essence, there is more "steep", if you can call it that. There were two of three chairs spinning. One groomed blue and several blacks, some with a single groomed path down the run. The snow was great, no rain/freezing rain, it snowed a couple of inches in the afternoon which freshened things up nicely. I skied bell to bell and definitely got a workout skiing the tracked up pow. I like the vibe of the place, very retro, as is the $35 lift ticket. I was going to take some pics, but the battery in my phone died.
I'll have to keep tabs on future lake effect events for Snow Ridge. I'm sure the day after midweek overnight storms would yield many untracked runs. I think they are open Wednesday thru Sunday. Huh, maybe Bob really is sick, it didn't snow last night.
