Headed up to Snowbasin today with Bobby D. Beautiful blue bird day. Not nearly as much rain crust as what we were experiencing at Alta the day before. It crops up in a few places, but much more edgible. Strawberry was closed yesterday due to wind, so that was our first stop and it provided some nice firm, smooth wind swept snow. It was off Allen peak were the really good stuff was hiding, out of the wind. Even though there had been a bit more traffic through on Saturday than we expected, Bobby was able to sniff out some nooks and crannies of untouched snow.

Snowbasin never ceases to amaze me. They actually put the gondolas to bed at night. They disappear under ground where I am sure there is some nice big carpeted room with gold chandeliers and a nice cozy down comforter for each one.

I thought the wasatch got a pretty big storm in the past week that took care of the previous rain crust. Did you guys get another rain event?

A report from Telejon? With photos? Did Bobby put you up to this???

rfarren, except on wind scoured areas like those mentioned by Telejon, or for example at the top of Stonecrusher and Lone Pine at Alta, the rain crust is pretty much a distant memory. See my post from the Cardiff Fork backcountry today:

no it's the same rain event but just not able to get any snow to stick . all the ridge tops were scoured to that layer for the first thirty feet departing them in any direction . the crust or rain layer was far less noticeable than at alta the day before. the rain layer at alta took a full on body blow from me saturday morning on the top of stonecrusher and didn't even crack ( i bounced ) 200yrds later i stopped sliding . today mt. ogden chute was open but not recommended west facing off the mt. allen summit was tricky back to the road that wraps back around to the front to access no name peak . these pics. were all taken on our last run or second to last run so the sun was heading way out there in the western sky . strawberry area provided john and i with some very nice plush skiing before the crowds discovered it three runs over there then back to j.p. chair . nice skiing along the no name peak rope line facing south headed back towards j.p. chair . all south facing aspects skied the best of any at any elevation . snow was more consistent down lower on the mt. out of yesterdays wind in no name area . the trees provided excellent skiing as they held snow from blowing around . how bout that cabin unloading setup to go underneath the lodge for the evening .
