My friend Jeff and I bought Mountain Collective passes for this year. We planned a driving trip to ski several of the destinations.
We headed from Los Angeles to the Aspen, CO area initially. We spent 3 nights at the Quality Inn in Glenwood Springs. We found that hotel to be clean and quiet. The complementary breakfast was also an efficient and economical way to get breakfast out of the way each day.
Despite recent warm and dry weather, the skiing at Snowmass was decent, and the views were even better.
I was impressed by the size of Snowmass, although I'm not sure I would be willing to pay $129 to ski there (if it wasn't part of the Mountain Collective).
Aspen Highlands, Feb. 10th
The next day we skied at Aspen Highlands. It was harder to find powder in the trees there, so I decided to do the Highland Bowl hike late in the morning. I bought a sling from the ski patrol to attach the skis to my back. There was some nice powder to be had in the trees, although the open areas were more skied off.
I enjoyed the powder enough to go for round 2. The weather had gotten cooler and the wind was blowing hard from the right side on the way up. It took me 37 minutes to do the hike the 2nd time. It was also snowing, hard enough to drop 2 or 3 inches, enough to improve the skiing noticeably. The Highland Bowl must really be great after a big powder dump.
