Stowe 12/15

I went to Stowe this afternoon to reap the benefits of 24+ inches of fresh overnight. It dumped in Burlington last night as well. Total snowfall in Burlington at the airport is 18.7 inches which fell from 5pm last night till about noon today.
Here is my report from skivt-l:

Had a final at 8am this morning and we managed
to get to the mountain by noon...roads were snowpacked but not bad. Skied
hard for 3-4 hours and we got one run in on the double and then the gondi
before they shut down due to wind. Quad was closed when we got there.
Off the double it was Starr which was windblown powder between old bumps.
A nice warm up. A few forays into the woods skiers left revealed what I
wanted to know: The snow was deep, very deep.

We went off to the gondola and were told as we were getting on that this
would be our first and last run since it would be closed when we got back
down. We took Chin Clip and I liked the layout of that run. There do
look to be some sweet tree lines in that area. It wasn't deep, but it was
soft with some nice bump sections. Remember this is my third time skiing
Stowe(my first season), and I'm just starting to get a feel for the major
areas on the mountain. I really like what I've seen so far. There are
more skiable woods here then you can shake a stick at.

We then made our way over to find the triple closed due to wind and got on
the double. We saw a few of the UVM club leaders duck the rope to
Hacketts Highway under the lift and saw them grab face shot after face
shot. We got off the lift, skied down and got some deep fresh tracks down
the sides of that. Then we went back up and noticed a guy
hiking/traversing over towards Hayride. We followed. He went down
Hayride but I saw some tracks heading into the woods on skiers left. We
followed the tracks and yes it was very deep. I want to say these glades
are on the trail map but I'm not sure. Either way, our first two runs
through there we traversed farther to the left each time to grab untracked
swaths of knee to occasionally thigh deep snow. It was so deep we often
found ourselves getting stuck with our skis facing straight downhill.
There are a few nice drops in there too. Each small drop was like jumping
into a swimming pool. It was very hard to keep speed up; we'd take a few
deep floating turns, go over a little roll over or drop off and stop dead
up to our waists in a drift on the lee side of the drop.

Either way, we skied the next 4 or 5 runs over there and it was really
some of the deepest snow I've ever skied and deepest I've ever skied in
the east. They really did get 24 inches and it snowed all day adding
maybe another 2-5 inches.

I'll be at Sugarbush tomorrow skiing left-overs.

-Scott

scott-----

hello-i love the gondi area at stowe-nice run that chin clip.exc layout-cruising!
was the waterfall under the gondi frozen near the very top? or is it just beginning...

brian o

The waterfall was pretty frozen. With all the snow we've had up there, I'm sure it could be launched at this point. Just scope the bottom before hand and let 'em fly.

-Scott

u r correct about the potential forest lines off the c clip skiers left... there are a few drop in points... worth checking out next time u go back BUT DON'T GO ALONE YOUR FIRST TIME ... the clip is my favorite on piste line at S, after the almighty goat
