Stowe Saturday Dec. 6

I wrote this yesterday to Skivt-l. Today in Burlington there is 18 inches of new snow with grass in some areas and 6 foot drifts in others. It is still snowing. The mountains got hammered...Stowe's at 30 or so and Killington's going for 40. Man did this turn out to be one helluva storm. Last night driving home from Stowe in the dark after a powder orgy was filled with whiteouts and heavy snow.

I have three classes that I need to attend tomorrow so I'm bummed cause with this wind I doubt they can run all the lifts at Stowe. I'm there on tuesday though!

Here's my report from yesterday (probably largely irrelevant now after 2 feet overnight):

Submerge, feel very little resistance, snow billows into chest, sometimes
into the face, and a couple times over-the-head...turn skis and repeat.

I'm still at a loss of words for this afternoon at Stowe. We did not ski
a single open run after 12pm but made endless laps on the quad. Nosedive
was where it was at. Top half had a little base packed down with 12-24
inches of total fluff on top. By the end of the day add another 6-8 of
ultra light stuff and you've got face shots like I have rarely experienced
in the east. This was snow where you pick some up and blow it out of your
hand and not all of the crystals ever made it back to the ground. It's
that light.
The trail was actually getting a little tracked out by about 2pm, but then
the storm really hit. Four inches must've fallen in about an hour and a
half. From 3pm-4pm it was occasional white room time. We shot a few
quick 15-second video clips and I'm going to try to find a way to post
them online. I have a feeling though, the knee deep to occasionally mid-
thigh deep will be a memory tomorrow after the storm drops 20 inches of
ultra light fluff.

Today was so good on Stowe's inbounds closures that I believe it rivals my
24 inch Alta day because for 4 hrs, we skied untouched champagne powder
while it dumped quarter size flakes and the wind filled in our tracks
after each run.

Currently in Burlington there is heavy snow falling and breezy conditions
with 8-10 on the ground and expected to continue through tomorrow although
a bit lighter in intensity...Sunday night wrap around might involve some
Champlain Valley convergence which could lead to period of enhanced
snowfall in the Champlain Valley. Storm is right on schedule.

-Scott
