Stratton 1/14-1/16

Made a trip to Stratton several weeks ago during the cold snap, -10 on top of the hill at opening. Bluebird days and a foot of snow prior to arrival made for some stunning photos. It was some of the best, and most scenic, groomed blue skiing I've done. Traffic was so light that trails skied the same all day long. Except for the first day, which was four inches of fresh atop groomed, sweet. Some decent bump runs could be skied if I wanted to challenge myself, but it's definitely an intermediate hill, nothing very steep. We had planned using our Warren Miller vouchers at Smuggler's Notch, but my son was not into the trip north. The gondola at Stratton was appreciated, but I spent most of my time on chairs. As has been said before, if dressed properly, especially with the sun out, it was quite comfortable. The wind did blow over four ski racks at the mid mountain lodge, skis and all. I had never seen that before. I looked out the window and saw my skis gone and thought, oh no not again. I had just had a pair of skis stolen at Greek Peak. I do now lock my skis, but mid mountain lodges are usually pretty safe, and I did not lock them there.

I gave serious consideration to venturing to Killington or Sugarbush, but Stratton is offering $59 ski and stay. We upgraded to the Inn, $79. The extra $20 gets you a continental breakfast in the main room, a better hot tub, sauna, internet access in the main room. The main room is a very comfortable place to hang, plasma tvs, bar, leather seats, fireplace. Worth the extra $20 imho. It was nice to stay at the resort, usually I find the cheapest nearby hole in the wall to stay at on my trips. Ho Hum Hotel, Burlington for example, great name.

So that's what Stratton looks like... I don't think I had ever seen photos.

I haven't seen "recent" photos. I was an every weekender there from 5th grade through high school. It was double chairs and natural snow then. I have a couple of free ski days at Stratton that I haven't cashed in yet. I'm hoping for a midweek powder day where it's empty and I can get good float on powder boards.... or a corn snow day where I'm not just skiing groomers.

Here is a video of half a run down Tamarack, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mmlDVvhv5g , I tried to point the camera back up the hill between my legs, but all I got was crotch. Stratton is definitely tame but when your home hill is 900ft of vert, even Stratton seems big. When I travel to ski the visual is a big part of the experience for me. That's why I think Stowe is my favorite so far, the skiing ain't too shabby either.
