Up at Sugarbush with the family for the week. Arrived yesterday and was not expecting much, but conditions turned out to be pretty reasonable today, as long as you stuck to the groomers, which everybody seemed to be doing.

Started with a few runs on North Lynx to get ski legs back. Cover was very good, firm snow but not icy, not too scraped off and with very few bare patches. Weather was great - 25-30 degrees, more sun than cloud, very little wind. Then headed over to Mt Ellen for more of the same. FIS was fun - good snow at the edge of the trail, with plenty of pitch and the occasional slick spot to keep it interesting. Awesome views from the top (is that Gore you can see on the other side of the lake?) Even got into a few bumps on Looking Good, which were not unpleasant and almost enjoyable for a few turns... All in all, a much better day than I was expecting, and we're all keeping a close eye on the forecast for tomorrow and Thursday, to see if the fun will really begin.

Meanwhile, the kids were in ski school, having a great time. Actually, my 8 year-old son was taking his first day of snowboard lessons - still not sure how I feel about that. I guess as long as it keeps him out there enjoying the snow, we're all good.

Thanks for the clarification. It looked too close for Whiteface, which must be 30 miles away, maybe? Just guessing from what I remember of driving up to Lake Placid one time.

It's 50 miles from summit to summit as the crow flies.

There are some mountains in the Adks that have avalanche paths. Don't confuse these for ski areas. Though you can see the ski areas from summit to summit.

If what I saw was 50 miles away, then the trails would look to have been about a half-mile across. So maybe it was the avalanche paths, as they did seem really wide. I'll take another look if the sun comes out again.
