Has anyone been up to Sugarloaf in the last week or so. By the looks of the ski report and the trail count being reduced from 68 trails to 43, the mountain must be in poor shape. Im just wondering if it is worth the 500 mile drive. Is anywhere in the east better right now for a vacation next week?

My friends just got back from Sugarloaf. They said the conditions were miserable and they didn't get any new snow. I just talked to one of them in the grocery store today and got the scoop. I would say that driving 500 miles would not be worth it. <BR> <BR>Go somewhere where they make a lot of snow. Though at this time, all the ski areas are hurting. But the good news is that cold temps (maybe too cold) are on the way and that will bring the snowmaking systems out of dormancy. <BR> <BR>The ski area with the best snowmaking wins. <BR> <BR>Best bets would be Okemo, Pico/Kton, or just get yerself a plane ticket to anywhere west. The snow out west is as good as it gets right now.
Southwest flies to SLC and Reno. It must be worth trying to come out here somewhere.
Thanks for the advise regarding Sugarloaf. The main issue is losing the $425 deposit that I have on the condo if I cancel. I wonder if the mountain recieved any snow this afternoon from the exiting storm. I do not remember if sugarloaf is strong with snowmaking, or if ASC will spend the money to resurface the trails that would make the mountain worth the trip. Perhaps I'll go to Okemo for 2-3 days next week instead. My skiing buddy is going up there this week, so he will let me know how the conditions are. This weather really bites.
I also mentioned SLC and Reno because there is lots of cheap lodging in those cities and you can commute daily to numerous major ski areas less than an hour away. If you're going to eat the deposit, you might as well get some quality out of it. <BR> <BR>I have only had to do this once, in March 1986, and Salt Lake is where I went to salvage the week. Check out the snow numbers in the "Snow and Ice..." thread and I'm sure you'll be tempted.
