Sugarloaf... incredible

Wow, I think that this is the very best October pic that I've seen in my life... at least for the mountains in the East. This is also one of the best I've seen of Sugarloaf ever.

See the full image pic (over 40kb) at :

this address... WOW !!

what's incredible is the 2 headed monster that exists.. 1) the new ski area management credo that does not have a lift spinning yet anywhere in new england 2) the lack of demand from us, as skiers and the dumb public recreational skiers in general, to the areas to spin a lift

I think the biggest problem on this point Joe is the 3 days well above the normal temp, sunday, monday and tuesday. Without them, I think both St-Sauveur and Killington would have opened this weekend.

Of course I agree with your points for the anti-early opening and the lack of demand, but once again, here is a list of a couple elements to think to allow some areas to open very early :

1 : it's too bad to make a ton of snow and to see it melt while there is just 2-3 skiers that had taken advantage of it.

So it must attract a lot of people. For this, the best thing would be to have a very wide trail, short. A snowpark on one side, groomed in the middle and ungroomed on the other side. (read moguls)

Spreading the snow on a big lenght will always be a problem, cause there is a lot of loss of snow and as soon as there is one place without snow, or too warm to make snow (bottom of mountain), you can't open at all.

Another thing would be to create a very long and wide white plastic blanket to cover all the trail when it's warm and sunny or rainy (and that the trail is not open of course), to reduce at maximum the loss of snow. A little bit like on baseball stadiums, when it rains.

Of course, it's always the same for all the other factors, like Mid-station chairlift + north side, high elevation, ETC.

I'm not sure to have already said it, but the Nordic triple chair at St-Sauveur has a Mid-station. It's used in summer for the waterpark and it was commonly used in the early 90s when they used to open in early october. I think that the Lower Nordic has been few times the only trail open in the mountain. It's not enough wide for what I was talking of, but the West 70 would be enough wide without problem and this would be a great trail here for the "concept" I was talking of, above. I don't know if there is places like that in New England ... any idea ?

(Profile at Cannon is way too long for this and Rime/East glade are too complicated to reach) Tenney is just for jibbers and has no vertical, compared to the 300' high of the lower 70/nordic.

Of course, the best thing, to have early openings, would be to have our mountain and to build a trail like this (this would be the only wide trail of the mountain) lol.

I don't want to repeat the discussion we had about Cannon and others potential early/late season trail. Killington had it, but they decided to create the new Superstar trail with HSQ for late season. Yes, it is definately a better spring skiing trail type trail, but it's a warmer spot and there also more black flies. The energy/cost it required to have the HSQ, shoot 40ft of snow, etc is enormeous. I know it's not a early season trail, but to state my point. Upper Downdraft and Cascades where probably not the best trails, however the weather conditions were better (ie. colder). SO, INSTEAD of cutting trees, LET'S CUT DOWN THE K1 PEAK GONDOLA and BRING BACK THE DOUBLE PK CHAIR WITH THE MIDSTATION!!!!

Okay, back to reality. This is never going to happend, get over it Pat.

You can always earn your turns...

If a ski area is going to operate in the red, I'd rather they do it at the end of the season. It always kills me to see them close it down when there's tons of that sweet, sweet spring corn to be sampled. Better hit the stairmaster and get ready to use the old left, right, repeat method of getting up the mountain.

u r very correct sig898, i agree... it appears , however there is no tradeoff.. they seem hell bent on shrinking both ends of the season.. the spring is the bigger travesty no doubt... a fair % of the blame is on the public though for not demanding it

Agree with you 3. (except may be for "removing the K1 gondola", cause it's unthinkable).

The only problem with early season hike is the fact that the coverage is not big and there is some major hazards that we can't see. There is not a lot of trails that could be a golf fairway at 20-25 degrees of steepness like the lower West 70, unfortunately. On end of seasons, if there is snow (except new snow), it's sure the coverage is enough big to ski it.

Too bad that the public in general stop to ski after april 1. I remember so much this old message of Joegm (april 26, 2003, after a 20" storm at Cannon with super pix of Way2ski). Surely one of the best editorials that I've ever read.

why don't all you fools give it up... i mean, come on now it's april.. shouldn't you guys be thinking about playing golf or preping up captain nemo for the big launch into the lake, or something just a little bit more constructive than attempting to ski in what are clearly marginal april snow conditions, as evidenced by above photos. to put the heat on the resorts by posting these pictures is pretty unfair in my opinion. the real "no bull" is that resorts want to be able to offer you a "quality"
product... and clearly they just cannot do that in april, again, as evidenced by above photos. you guys do yourselves no favors at all by insisting on posting photos that clearly support arguments made by resort management that the idea of a quality ski experience being had in april is a foolhardy notion indeed. hopefully all of you donkeys will get with the program and start towing the company line and support our ski area managers in their decisions to not attempt to market skiing in april and may and to not spin lifts in these "awful" snow conditions. anyone with an ounce of common sense knows that march 31st is the end of the ski season. what are you guys trying to prove anyway?????
