Bright sunny day. The low Utah humidity had dried out the snow. Conditions were really nice. Groomers skied really well. Also, the powder was nice up high.
I liked this place. I had not been since it was ParkWest. Frankly, I think it's changed for the better. Yes, the mountain is a little difficult to navigate. However, there are a lot of hidden areas that were really nice. Yes, they are selling lots of homes and condos to pay for this -- but I accept this.
One missed opportunity. The Canyons has not strung any lifts up to the ridges accept for 9990. Why not? Yes there is avalanche potential (like last month), but everything seems to stop at the tree line. Oh well.
What I liked about the Canyons
1. a lot of nice groomers served by HS lifts at many different aspects.
2. the north sides of almost every peak had great steeps with great snow-- the Abyss off Peak 5, Northside of 9990, Deschutes off of Tombstone.
3. Backcountry gate. There is a lot of great terrain off of 9990 with just a little hiking. (However, looking at some skier's choices of route selection, skiing alone and no gear -- I would expect people will continue to die. Oh well).
