'The Slides' at Whiteface

I am going to be in the East later this winter in March and was going to ski Whiteface with a friend.

Some questions about the Slides:

Has anyone skied the Slides here?
Are they open very often?
Are they serious about avy gear when open?

I have not skied them because they are hardly ever open.

I think avy gear is a good idea, though when they do open them, they are usually deemed to be "safe" from avalanches.

I'll be up there next week...we'll see what happens...though I doubt they will be open. You can ski them legally by skinning up the access road from Wilmington.

Hi Chris,

I've skied the Slides on two seperate occasions. Last year and in 2002. I believe Tony and I had a bit of a discussion about the Slides in my TR from last year.

Avy gear? I talked to someone from WF about it. The story that I was told that they will try to open it more often, however sometimes they will require Avy gear if the risk is higher. Not sure how true this is. I didn't have avy gear or helmet last year when I skied it.

As the SuCo maggots would say, I "beatered" down one descent during our mythical Winter 2001 season. I stink and had no business being there.

Didn't much-lauded Skiing Magazine have a short piece recently with descriptions of each "slide?"

OK. So the Slides are mythical - like the Snowfields at Sugarloaf. Never open and much talked about.

My friend grew up in Keene Valley about 30 min from Lake Placid -- and has never skied the Slides. So I'm not banking on it.

I forget there is a road to the top of Whiteface sometimes.

I had the chance to ski the slides at the end of last season. Those slides are amazing; the closest you can get to skiing Mt-Washington with a lift. Two thumbs up!!

The Adironcacks and Whites are the more spectacular East Coast mountains to me. Greens are a little too rounded.

Hope things are good. I only have a quiver of fat skis now...so I hope Iceface does not rear its head.
