Your best bet is to read all the posts here from the weekend. Check the snow reports from all the possible open ski areas and watch the weather. Best not to decide until the day prior and when you have all your data. It usually becomes clear in the 24-48 hours where the best skiing is going to be within your 5 hour radius.
At this time you'll have a few choices in the Catskills: Hunter, Windham, Belleayre and if there's snow that way, check Plattekill's website.
Mount Snow and Stratton will be online by then. Okemo is always a good bet for a lot of top to bottom terrain and excellent snowmaking. The crowds flow nicely down these slopes and even if there's a line for the Northstar chair, it moves fast and the crowds spread out on the trails. I know they are expanding their terrain as fast as possible and they've had the temps.
Kton = crowded, but great terrain and snowmaking, can get skied off. Crowds are typical.
Sugarbush is open too, but that may be beyond your 5 hour mark from NJ.
