Whiteface conditions

While I haven't been up there this season, I do have some friends who live up there. I haven't heard anything very good. It has been very icy everywhere in NY since it rained everywhere nearly every week this winter. Make sure you have sharp edges on your skis, and do a snow dance. Maybe some new snow in the forecast will help the situation.

I'm heading up there in 3 weeks. At least there is plenty of other stuff to do in Lake Placid if the skiing sux.

If you do go to Whiteface and haven't yet bought lift tix...just buy a one-ride on the gondola to test out conditions. If you want to stay and ski more, you can upgrade for just the additional cost of the lift ticket.

Thanks
I am going ice climbing on Friday then skiing over the weekend.. I am hoping for some snow.
I might head down to Gore if Whiteface bites.

The Gore plan is a good strategy.

The ice conditions up there are stellar right now.

At least there is plenty to do up there no matter what the weather.

Have fun.

I hope jasoncapecod went to WF because this week the snow has piled up. The mountain has been getting nailed with lake effect and clippers. Furthermore, The SLIDES opened today.

Aside from last weekend, conditions have been remarkable considering the weather in the northeast this season.

Email just rec'd from ORDA spokesman Sandy Caligiore:

5-9" new snow past 24 hrs

25" new snow past 7 days

68 trails

38-54" base

The Slides are open. Required to bring avalanche beacon and shovel
(seriously)

Packed powder conditions

Thank you.

Sandy

Nor when I did it. Puhleeze.

Looks like conditions have dramatically changed up there in the last few days.

While they might not have required beacons and shovels previously, I think it is a good idea. Afterall, they ARE AVALANCHE SLIDES. Also, it is a good form of crowd control, as only serious backcountry experts are going to have the required gear, though unfortunately it keeps experts like some of us who don't have the gear yearning.

Just got back from Whiteface.
Conditions were great.. Mind you I am talking about Whiteface. It skied real fast but not to icy.. Yes the slides are opened, But how many east coast skiers have Avi beacons and shovels? Any way the skiing was great and it was snow like crazy.

Like anyplace, when there's new snow, the skiing is great. Add the vert and steeps of WF and it can be awesome.

My friends in LP are reporting excellent conditions this weekend.

Wondering how the backcountry is faring, as I'll be up that way in March a ew times. Been waiting for the snow to start piling up.

Yes, contrary to popular belief, WF does have some great skiing to offer!
I've always said that Whiteface was in my top 3 places in the East.

Regarding the Avy gear. It might have been a good idea after last the recent snow (?), but will it be the new policy regarding skiing the slides regardless of Avy danger?

This could be a matter to debate. I'm sure that this type of debate might have occur when Avy Gear has become mandatory on certain in-bound terrain in the West.

Questions:

1) As Sharon mentioned, Avy Gear requirements might limit the undesirable skiers/boarders (ie. people that don't have the skills to go on that terrain.

2) OR... by doing so, how many serious skiers/boarders that have the skills or expertise but not the gear, will simply prefer skiing/boarding elsewhere? Some skiers (not me) don't like skiing the hard groomers that Whiteface tends to offer, without the Slides... Their interest in Whiteface might be limited.

On a side-note, a store renting Avy Gear might make a killing, especially from the thrill seeking tourists. MMMMmmm :-k I always though that Lake Placid would be a nice place to live.

I noticed that today's report didn't mention anything about the Avy Gear requirements in the Slides. So if the decision is based on actual Avalanches Danger, I can live with that (and ski it too). 8)
