I posted this on another forum yesterday but forgot to put it here. I'm trying to decide where to ski this weekend in the dacks. If anyone has any more turn oriented ideas i'm open to em. Okay so now the tr...
After attending a few morning classes we threw our gear in the car and headed for the dack's around 11:00. It was raining hard until we reached the Whiteface Highway where it had just turned to snow. We strapped our gear to our packs and started hiking up the highway. About a half mile up we ran into a camera crew who had driven up to take some footage of snow. They stopped and took a minute to interview us but wouldn't give us a ride fruther up to the snow...but assured us it was good. So we hike a little further til we hit the snow at about .9 miles... we threw our skis on and headed up the road. The snow was falling pretty heavily and the more we climbed the harder the wind got. We finally made the castle just below the summit around 5:00 and decided that due to the very high winds and near zero visibility that was far enough. We ducked in behind the building and started getting ready for the way down. We started down shortly after but didn't get very far before deciding to duck into the entrance of the tunnel to the elevator, I tried the door and found it to be open. So we ducked inside the heated tunnel and took some time to dry out and warm up. Then we headed back out to find that Tim's skis wouldn't move, I think mainly due to them warming up and getting wet in the tunnel. So we messed with them a bit but finally decided just to try to get down some because it was starting to get dark. We got down past wilmington turn and decided it was time for headlamps. We inched around lake placid turn, fighting the rediculous winds and tim decided it was time to put his trekkers back in so he could have a free heel to be able to kick and glide some. The rest of the way down things got better. The wind dropped a good bit once we got into more sheltered areas and the shallower snow allowed us to just sit back and enjoy the ride. Finally around the 1 mile mark I was able to get in my first real turns of the season scrapping my edges a few times on the pavement under the thin snow cover. But it felt good to be skiing again.
Now for the good part....pics
The gate
Look at all that nice snow...
Time to put the skis on
Skiinin' up
Calling folks back in classes to tell them were gonna be on the news and there missing out on tons of snow
Taking a break in the warmth of the tunnel
The end of an exciting trip
For anyone planning to head up this week or weekend unless the weather gets warm the highway should be a very good ski right from the gatehouse. Just be careful of that wind. There was probably around 2-3" at the gate when we left and it was still snowing quite hard I'd assume theres a good bit more there now. We hope to get in some more skiing somewhere this weekend...just not sure where yet.
