Whiteface, NY - April 15, 2006 - Day for Hard Core skiers

Third week in a row at Whiteface and last.

This was probably not the best day weather wise, but it was the day that my friend visiting could make it. Definitely a hard core day. Parking lot was virtually empty and the forecast was  .

Weather:

Forecast was for 30-40% chances of rain.

We started skiing at 10am and skied the Essex and headed toward to Summit Quad for Skyward. Also skied Paron and Thruway before heading for lunch and a change into lighter (not as warm jacket). Just then it started raining. The time was 11:45. Rain poured during 30minutes.

After that we headed back out, maybe 30 minutes later...while on the double a light drizzle started falling. We headed for shelter at the Mid Chalet. Rain stop again, so he went back skiing...but for a third time...

Back to the bottom and get a change into dry stuff (goggle, hat plus adding a windbreaker). The rain was intermittent from the last two hours.

We didn't get to wet once when had the windbreaker and hoods on.

Snow conditions:

Top was great, Mid flat parts around the bottom of the Summit Quad, Upper Facelift and bottom of mountain was marginal at best.

Mountain Run and it's neighbours were in great shape.

Skyward: Great - same narrow entry at the top.
Upper Valley, top of Lower Valley, Easy Street, top of Boreen to be avoided. No rock and mud than snow here folks.

Best to ski to the bottom? (do not ski via the top of Lower V and Upper or Boreen). Ski from the top of Little Whiteface via Approach - Thruway - Draper's Drop (beautiful) then the last part of Lower Valley. The bottom is very sketchy. You can probably download with the gondola.

Tomorrow is Whiteface's last day and the damages to the slopes increased with the rain today. It was pouring again we were driving away. :? The skiing was good in some place and terrible in others. Still, all in all, we had a great time.

The highlight of the day were the last two runs of the day (Skyward - Boreen - big mistake for that last part + Approach-Thruway-Draper) . In a drizzle with an incredible full rainbow over us.

14 runs, 9000m, 3 rain delays, 3 different vest or jackets, 2 hats and goggles and ONE RAINBOW. :P

Tomorrow I'm letting my gear dry for Tremblant's last day on Monday. 8)
