Happy Birthday to Me! \:D/

well, technically the 31st is my bday (oooooh, spookie!) but this is close enough! i have gotten some fantastic presents over the years, but this... you could almost say it... takes the cake!!! YEA BABY!!!

arrived an hour early due to forgetting to set back the clock  never had to worry about that before during the ski season if you know what i mean ;) suffice to say, i was not alone as after claiming first place in line at 8:15AM, folks quickly lined up going almost back to the quad! heh! as i remarked to the liftie: "better one hour too early than 15 minutes late!" which i thought i was. seats were loaded around 8:45AM.

heading up, it quickly became apparent that much consolidation had occured since the previous few days' romps. a few brooks were openly flowing on the lower mountain, especially a big one winding down the center of the glade under the lift line.

grooming had occured on most of the main trails, but those great trails wildcat has that are not as obvious had EXCELLENT natural snow. cat track to middle catapult was first up and i wasted no time in tearing up EXCELLENT bumps on mid cat. got winded quite quickly though! this is the type of conditions i look forward to in hopefully january and definitely february. cover was superb and the bumps were soft and delicious! definitely something to repeat, which i gladly did two more times. down lower on the mountain things were quite as hot with lower catapult sporting decent packed powder with occasional thin cover, not mind blowing.

feline started having some visitors underneath the triple. feline reminds me a lot of a slightly less steep but narrower red line at magic. cover was great overall and i was REALLY PUMPED to be dropping a steep and narrow liftline trail with great cover and an audience to watch. i got some hoots and holars up top and then i saw a little slice of aerial heaven... an 8+ foot drop off a rock cliff. part of me said it was WAY too early in the season to be going big. heck, i don't know if i've ever hit anything that large and exposed before let alone first day of lift serve when my legs aren't all there. but i was feeling it and NAILED IT! craptastic, just an awesome air (something in my skill set i am looking to develop this season). i repeated later and nailed the landing again but got ejected from my right ski :(

catanary up next with some great natural but thin in spots and water bars could have used a little more filling, but no issues there. nice bumps per usual down lower.

i think i ended up doing lynx at some point during the afternoon. there was some GREAT stuff at the feline exit, but in general the lower you went the less tasty the snow got. still good, but not the same level as the packed pow up higher.

noon time came and that was my pre-approved time to give the lift a break and head for the top. and man oh man was i not alone. about a dozen other folks were booting up while i was doing the skin thing. felt weird applying the skins at the top of the tomcat chair. got a few questioning looks until i took off, heh! SO SO many boot tracks going up upper polecat. any hope of fresh was dead before it even began. the skin was short and sweet putting at the top o' the cat with fantastic views of MW. i grabbed a snack and hung out for a while, enjoying the summit. a stark contrast was noticable looking off the backside of the cat into the north conway area and surrounding hills... with no snow to be seen any where. then, turning around, MW looks almost mid-season form except for some gullies, tucks, and the slides yet to fill in. really impressive and not a cloud touched washington all day despite one hovering over wildcat for part of the afternoon.

coming down the wildcat trail was friggin sweet! all natural and nice and packed down. incredibly packed down! it is amazing to consider just how many people hiked for turns at wildcat. these folks weren't your typical tele or AT crowd either... it was mostly people knowing there had been pow to be found and earning a run. good for them. probably best top to bottom run i have ever had on the wildcat trail. i have had some good runs too.

exiting out of feline, i had to exclaim "this much fun shouldn't be legal in october!" apparently it is! wildcat did the smart thing (sadly for those of us skiing this weekend!) and groomed out nearly every trail that gets groomed during the winter on a regular basis. even the upper trails like polecat and lynx got the once over. and understandably so! my pole could go over 2/3's into the snow on the wildcat trail. that is a base that isn't going to completely disappear in the next few weeks. lower mountain will likely take a beating and i doubt lower mountain will be skiable next weekend.

lines were managable, but the line did get backed up to the gondi building! just before lunch time though, other than that only a few minutes wait. thankfully they got a single line going, so less than that for me :D

it is in my opinion that wildcat likely made A HUGE PROFIT this weekend. with no snow making, most employees likely not making more than 7-10 an hour tops, only one slow lift running, no snow making, lots of people, lots of people buying food, lots of people buying beer, etc. i would like to hear how wildcat did in the $$$ department because if they did well, it totally disputes the later opening for money theory. kmart is legit on this because most people skiing kmart early season aren't buying lift tickets (yea, season pass holders are paying customers too, but no additional revenue for the resort THAT DAY to pay for THAT DAY"S costs). but a no frills place like wildcat with only one lift lays it on the line and packs the parking lot two days in a row and has people dropping bills like crazy. this is all under the assumption the area can open without making snow, which becomes a tough issue this time of year. props to wildcat for making the early opening call, smart business decision in my opinion as well. i have a short film coming up for next month because october bandwidth is maxed, check back in two days.

Wierd I didnt know feline could open when tomcat was running, last year I skied it and I had to duck to get under some of the chairs. Did you ski hairball?

Great report River,

A lot of people I spoke too had never been to Wildcat before, this implies to what I've been saying over the years. If you're the only game you'll attract skiers/boarders that generally wouldn't ski there during the season (ie. my case with Killington over the last 20 years where I've skiied it 90% of the time when it's the only skiing left in the East).

The evolution of Feline:
the trails was rope-off until late friday. I don't recall seeing anything that hasn't covered. I skiied Saturday afternoon, it was definately pack it and the snow was scraped off near the mini-cliff. Ski it, jump it and avoid the obstacles (there were a few fallen skiers in the trail near the cliff when I skiied by).

About Feline being open when Tomcat chair is open. On Saturday, the patrol rope-off part of the trail where the chair was too low.

Hairball:
It was being skiied saturday, it's was getting pretty rocky (from someone I meet at the intersection of Al's Folly). Had to believe, but I bearly ski the same run more than twice in 2 days of skiing.

Grooming:
The grooming opened out many trails. Prior to grooming, the lower intermediates was hard to ski. The snow at the bottom was pretty grabby + water bars where everywhere. The best example was on Alley Cat, which was official open on saturday. Barely any traces of the previous day water bars.

a few brooks were openly flowing on the lower mountain, especially a big one winding down the center of the glade under the lift line.

That one was already pretty open on early friday morning.

okay, just found out that 1/3 of my video was scraped due to a malfunction that could have easily been prevented. unfortunately i lost a few action shots which are pretty hard to come by as it is when you aren't skiing with a partner with whom you can set things up. pretty quick edit, nothing fancy but a little more polished than that cannon vid i through together. i should have enough bandwidth within the next 36 hours to swing this.

couple of panoramic shots as well:

btw, juliana hatfield's new album 'made in china' is one of the best rock albums i have heard i years, seriously blows me away. it carries my strongest recommendation and i don't give those out very often. i had this song stuck in my head all day while skiing and it was an obvious choice and good fit.

Sorry to use up your bandwith but I couldn't seem to resist downloading it. BTW I think that if you "right click and save target as" you save bandwith? IS this correct? Anyway awesome movie. Even for Sunday the snow still looks like it was great. The lift line shots were great looking down on the people skiing below you. This will be one movie I will be saving on my computer...Wildcat just made History!

I ducked a rope to ski hairball on Saturday. Was not a good idea. There wasn't enough snow to cover a large rockfall in the middle.

Hairball was the next on my list, until I spoke to someone at the end of it. I had just skiied Aly's.

I did Black Cat on Friday, let's just say that I was worried for my skis. Haven't never skiied Wildcat, I didn't how the trail was normally. I didn't really hit anything, but the trails seemed covered in boulders.

Great report! I was there yesterday also, but it would be redundant to add anything about the conditions...you covered it perfectly.

I started hiking earlier in the day (9:30) and found so much untracked up top that I only ended up using the lift twice.

Your report makes it sound like they had the lift running in the afternoon. Is that true? In typical Wildcat fashion, at ~1:30 the lift broke down. They fired up the diesel to evac those on board, and told the rest of us that it would be down for the remainder of the day. We all shot back over to Guest Services where they handed out full vouchers for any day this year. I grabbed my voucher and split to do some hiking at lower elevations where it was more like October is supposed to be.

If they got things back up and running, I'm happy to hear that more turns were had. I was happy enough with my deal though. Basically a free day of riding in October! Actually somewhat better than free considering the ticket was only $39 yesterday and the voucher can be cashed in on a regular ($55) day.

Happy Birthday River,

I noticed something while I was in line for my lift ticket on Friday morning. Did you know that the ticket was FREE when it's your birthday. I wonder if I will still be open in June this year.

Anyway, the skiing was FREE today for everyone. No lifts were running today, so it's earn your turns day.

yea, i know wildcat's free bday skiing offering. i was always bummed that i could never take advantage of it. then what do you know... only one day off this year!?! :? #-o

Great vid, Riv! And happy birthday, for an hour and a half more, anyway!

FYI, for times when you need to preserve bandwidth, there are various free video hosts available. There's of course Google Video, but access isn't instantaneous -- it needs to be approved first. I just used Zippy Videos (http://www.zippyvideos.com/) for the first time yesterday for my Snowbird vid of the day, and it worked like a charm. I won't use this for any "feature" videos that'll go on SkiMovies.com, but for quick 'n dirty vids it's perfect.

As for Juliana Hatfield, she's been a Boston classic since the Blake Babies, and afterward when she started hanging with Evan Dando (Lemonheads). I didn't realize that she had a new release -- thanks for the heads-up. Great tune as always, but she always had the most inane lyrics that used to bug the snot out of me.

That only makes a difference in bandwidth if you watch it more than once.

thanks and thanks! i saw the zippy video and took a look. pretty cool, but upload space is pretty limited. definitely looks like a great place to put something up quick and dirty. i actually missed a zero when looking at my bandwidth numbers and thought i had used 9 Gb instead of .9 Gb. slight difference! so i am actually doing quite well.

for some reason, i was never much into juliana hatfield. i guess i never got past that video where she was in the tanning booth, never cared much for that song! but i had a tune or two of hers that i enjoyed. recently i have been looking up bands from the 90s. you watch, in a few years 90s will be the new 80s, if you know what i mean? actually, 90s are already on their way back. any ways, the lyrics from her new album work for me. especially if you read the 'letter' from her on her web page. seems very reflective of her opinions of the recording industry and the business and how she got through her innitial entrance into the major recording world. she released the new album on her own label, i think she handled the production too. it's a very raw album, which i love. over produced music bores me to tears which is 98% of major label released music these days.

Unless I misunderstand it's 25 Mb per video and not per account, so it's actually quite fair. If I'm wrong, and I often am, I can't imagine what would prevent establishing multiple accounts.

I couldn't agree more.

I know it has already been said but that was a great vid... You have a very strong sense of space and flow. Nice.

Some of the panoramic pictures from Wildcat's summit remind me of when I was out in the Rockies last year  . No wonder it is "#1 in the East for Scenery". I have to make it over to Wildcat to ski sometime. It is at the top of my list of places to ski that I haven't been to yet along with Sugarloaf and Magic.
This weekend I didn't have time to take a full day to go ski there. Otherwise I would have. I did hike Burke on Sunday and got some first tracks off of the summit. I will post a report about it when I get the pictures off of my camera  .

looking forward to a burke report! i almost did burke last wednesday but decided on cannon instead for high elevation and better top to bottom options without a run out. if you are down with burke, wildcat and magic are right up your alley.
