Winter is upon us!!! 28" of snow

Go for it , if it is close by you have nothing to loose. The earlier the better as the" fresh snow look " will only last so long after wind ,sun and heat given off by the ground starts the melting process.

3 hours to Holiday Valley, 1 1/2 hours to Tug Hill

may end up in the Tug with my touring pals...there are about 8 people here chompin at the bit to slide on snow in the woods with skinny skis. Tug Hill doesn't offer much worthy of alpine skiing (except on the flanks, like Snow Ridge, but they weren't in the band). So we'll be on the skinny skis with the dogs trotting along and rolling in the snow. They love it as much as I do.

Too bad Acid Christ doesn't have a set of climbing skins and a touring rig...though he has the boots (go figure, he can be such a poser).

Ironically it looks like I may be back East next week (Quebec City area) for the first time since moving West. If there's any promise of white stuff I'll bring my sticks. Anyone plan on being in that neck of the woods?

Dude, you've been to HV before...remember??? It wasn't worth flying in from SLC for. Seriously. But if you want to get some exercise, I'll go there with you again...maybe earing turns at Holimont would be a better bet....but I'm game if you show....otherwise I'll go xc with my friends in the Tug.

Here's the report

Woo Hoo! Big Snow!

image
Wow, 28" of snow and it's still coming. What a great way to start winter! This certainly opens the possibility of an early opening, but we'll know more later today or tomorrow.

The issue is that the ground is very warm and wet underneath and that lovely 28" packs down to about 6-8" with a very soggy bottom. Why do we pack it at all? The snow is so heavy, especially near the ground, that if you point your skis straight down the hill you don't move!

Plans are to pack a few slopes so that the incoming cold weather can chill down the ground (the thick snow insulates the ground and keeps it from freezing). We'll see what it all looks like on Tuesday and make a decision then. Keep checking back for updates and keep your fingers crossed!.

Ummm...read again. I'll likely be in Quebec City. I'm sure as hell not driving from there to Holiday Valley. I'll need a diversion while there, so I was thinking of bringing my sticks if anything is worth skiing near Quebec City.

Unless the upcoming clipper drops a good amount of snow up there, there may not be much natural, but should be plenty of snowmaking in the meantime. Supposed to be cold all week.

Below freezing and day time highs barely go above 0 celsius. Snowmaking weather, MSS is probably going to open soon. MSA should definitely be interesting in 10 days from now. Let me know, I'll probably be down in Montreal to take care of some things. A detour day-trip to MSA wouldn't impossible.

That would be terrific if it works out! My flight's now booked, arriving Sunday night and returning Friday morning. I'll be checking things toward the end of the week and making my decision whether or not to bring gear then.

MSA is opening this weekend. You would flying back to SLC on the 28th? Remember I got a nice powder day last weekend in November at MSA last year. I'm just looking at the Weather Network for Quebec City (not that it's the most reliable), temps for that week are:

Sunday: -2/ -8 - sunny
Monday: +6 / -4 - wet snow (rain: 20-30mm / snow 5cm) - remember that this would probably snow at MSA.
Tuesday: +4 - wet snow
Wednesday: -4 - partially cloudy
Thursday: -4
Friday: +2 - partially cloudy
Saturday: +2 - rain
Sunday: +2 - snow
Monday: -1 - snow

That's the date I would be leaving toward MTL, oh well, I guess I'll have to go to Utah if we want to ski a few runs together. :ski:

Sweet!!

The radar return didn't show much falling in Turin. I think it is a shadowed area. Glad you got some up there.

I think I will be staying closer to home this weekend. It's been a long week (2 funerals...I'm in NJ) so it will be good to get home and start my ski season this weekend.

Bring your skis Marc...

Continuing Highs below freezing for at least the next 6 days. Great snowmaking...Tremblant is opening with 10 trails today.

Ready, set, FIRE! Mont-Sainte-Anne opens on November 22nd, 2008

Beaupré, November 19th, 2008 – Skiers and riders, hungry for white stuff, can devour the trails at Mont-Sainte-Anne come next Saturday morning! Indeed, starting on November 22nd, the resort will be opened 7 days a week! One of the first resorts to open in the North East, Mont-Sainte-Anne has been blasting snow on its North side since the beginning of the week. Over 110 snow guns are at work, for everyone’s greatest pleasure!

Fire away!

Since the beginning of the week, the mountain operation’s team has proceeded to ignite snow guns all over the North side. To guarantee efficient snow making, Mother Nature must grant us with temperatures that range from -5 to -7. She has done even better than meet the minimal requirements... The consistency of the cold front she has thrown our way has and will continue to allow us to work around the clock, the whole week. The trails Quanik, Paradeuse, Printanière and Melanie Turgeon are currently being snowed-in. We bet skiers and riders will be numerous to attack the North Side this week-end!

Current summit webcam.

Natural snow?

Monday night: 1cm
Tuesday: 2 cm
Tuesday night: 11cm
Wednesday: 3cm

As I said in another discussion about MSS opening, MSA would be my first bet on best-quality skiing in Quebec this late week of November.

Yeah, looks like I am, although the airlines are really pissing me off right now. I'm booked through Air Canada. However, my outbound flights are code shares on United. Even though I've met all of Air Canada's baggage requirements, apparently I'm at the mercy of whomever is checking in my bags, so I can theoretically get double-dipped at the United counter in SLC and neither Air Canada nor United is willing to do anything about it.

Still, the worst case scenario is that I'll be paying an extra $25 per passenger to bring skis, as United's first bag is $15 (which I'd be checking anyway) and second bag is now down to $25. On the return my ski gear is pre-registered on Air Canada and Air Canada will be checking me in at Quebec City so I should face no additional fees there.

For a minimum of $50 in bag fees, I'd be thinking about bringing boots and renting skis for November manmade. Nonetheless it does look like there will be enough snow to be worth skiing some.

So Air Canada still gives a break if you "pre-register" the ski gear? I'd recommend bringing a printout of that preregistration with you.
