Zermatt Snow 2025/26: Rote Nase Cable Car Policy & Hohtälli Zone

I am not sure what is going on with Zermatt, but operationally, it has not lived up to its potential in the 2020s.

I have only been watching closely for the last 4-5 years or so, but I noticed that many of its yellow itineraries never officially opened, even though they likely had adequate coverage by later in the season.

This has been the case for:
  • Rothorn
  • Hohtalli (The Rote Nase Cable Car appears to have never opened to the public, which prevents most access to the Stockhorn zone.)
Without access to these areas, Zermatt's reputation as a top expert and off-piste destination is severely compromised. And likely would not recommend.

Also, even today in April, Cevinia keeps all its lifts and runs open, unlike Zermatt. Just seems odd.

Saw a great write-up/season summary of Cervinia (& Zermatt)'s Snowfall for Winter 2025/26.

This Instagram account, Meteovalledaosta, always has the most relevant, timely updates for the Aosta Valley (NW Italy), with highly featured resorts including Cervinia, Courmayeur, Monterosa, and Pila, and allows some extrapolation to semi-adjacent resorts/countries (Zermatt, Chamonix, La Rosiere). It's the Official Italian Weather Account for the Aosta Valley (I should see if counterparts in other countries post as extensively).
