Vail Tahoe resorts, CA and NV 1/26-28/2019

I wrote this up late on Fri 2/1, but got too busy to post it. Now I’m at Casino in Stateline (South Tahoe), NV and their Internet is so bad, I’m posting without pictures which have already been posted in Tahoe thread at pugski.com

Skied Heavenly today (2/4) where they’ve reported 19” new in 24 hours each of the last two day with a snow level of 3600' (Heav's CA base is 6600')

Kirkwood, CA 1/27/2019

A friend and I left San Jose about 5:40 and arrived Kirkwood a little after 9 and parked in closest lot across from Timber Creek base. I rode Timber Creek a coupIe of times, then we rode and skied Cornice and Reut, then went up chair 2 to get to the Backside. I had 4 rides there before crowds drove me away via One Man Chute.

After that I skied the Wall a few times. Snow was very good, especially in Eagle Bowl (in center in sun in background).

We took a break in the plaza and I thought I'd lost my ski watch as I took off my jacket. It was gone when I looked for it on my jacket. I looked through all my pockets and stuff and re-traced my steps to rack where I'd left my skis, but couldn't find it. Not only was I bummed since I'd recently had the battery replaced, I also had new band and 'carrier' (that band attaches to) installed since plastic had broken so I couldn't use it on outside of my jacket as designed for a while. And it was a gift from my wife many years and battery replacements ago. After reporting it to lost and found, I spotted in under a dustpan leaning against the fence separating lost and found from our table. It may have fallen there when I dropped some of the wrapper from the Nature Valley granola bar they were giving away into dustpan. If it had fallen in the dustpan, it probably would have been lost.

Kirkwood was running steep Lookout Vista T-bar for then first time in a long time that I was there.

So I rode it twice, both times single. It's easier with a similar-sized partner, but none were available. I shortened the nearly 100 vertical foot hike to base of T-bar by about 1/3 by skiing, then riding chair 3 which gets you a little higher than chair 2 from where most people start bootpack. Both times I came down the W side from top of T-bar, which was still in the sun around 3 PM. Some of the snow was great and some needed a little more packing down and/or sun. My day was 24 lift rides including two on T-bar and 23.5K

Heavenly, CA and NV 1/28/2019

After a very warm Sunday at Kirkwood, we had cooler temps with a lot of overcast and a very few flakes on Mon at Heavenly. My highlight on Mon was Stateline Chute in Killibrew Canyon. The entrance was too rocky,

but I was able to come in from the side about 15 feet below the top for a lot of steep turns on great snow.

Getting across refrozen tracks to get on traverse to the exit was trying.

I never tried Mott although it may have been good later in day as lower CA had softened when we skied to the base at end of day. After meeting my friend for lunch, we skied three long NV runs: 1. Olympic from top of Olympic chair, then North Bowl to base of long, slow North Bowl chair 2. Dipper Run to Upper Perimeter to NV Trail to Lower Stagecoach and 3. Upper North Bowl to Olympic to Lower NV trail to Boulder Base. Since we had missed a shuttle (I saw it leaving lot), we did a quick lap on slow Boulder and caught next shuttle.

Northstar, CA 1/29/2019

Northstar was all groomers for me on Tues. I rode gondola once, Zephyr twice, Comstock 9x and Backside 10x for 32.5K vertical, my season high. Friend I went with got to Lookout. I was on my way there, but another friend who lives near Truckee, who was with 5 others, let me know he was on his way up the front-side so I met up and skied with them instead.

After a chilly lunch outside at top, we skied more and got separated before meeting up for 2 PM Tost. I got the 2nd to last glass of champagne they gave out. We quit about 3, but were not on the road until 3:45 since I had to get skis from friend from Truckee who had gone to the Ice Rink while other friend and skied Home Run where we had moderate walk to car (no shuttle either way). Even with a stop in Vacaville, I got to friend's house near downtown San Jose in 3 1/2 hrs.

On Monday at Heavenly, EpicMiss counted 5 lifts/4.6K vertical for me, while my watch had 25 runs/28.5K. Tuesday at Northstar, EpicMix had 22 lifts/32,347 while my watch had 22 runs/32,490' vertical, very close.

Unlike here, PugSki pics are not visible other than as thumbnails unless you are registered on the site.

For this and other reasons, I would respectfully suggest that tseeb post his pictures here as priority over PugSki.

Added pictures to original post. Will be interesting to see how many more views I get as it was at 458.

Thanks for the report, and for adding the pics.

An FYI re. Nature Valley products that I found to be a bit surprising given their name: if you look at the bottom of the Nutrition Facts label there is a caveat, "Partially Produced With Genetic Engineering". That may not bother you, but I thought I would point it out in case it does. I personally try to avoid GMO's, as I don't think enough study has been done to find out what kinds of long term effects consuming them may cause. I'd rather not be a guinea pig in this big experiment.

I appreciate tseeb showing me the way to Stateline Chute in 2016. That's a great run I had not skied before in 18 prior days at Heavenly since 1979. Most of those days were before the Mott chair was built though.
