Les Houches is unlike the rest of Chamonix -- there are no bowls, no open spaces, and sits at a low elevation. Instead, it is tree-lined and mostly groomed. This made for a pleasant half-day of skiing recovering from New Years. Also, it would be good on a stormy day.
There are 3 long groomers down the front face of Les Houches. However, the Kandahar (Chamonix World Cup Race) was being hosted on Jan 8-10 and the main black run was closed. There were lots of beginner/low intermeduate runs near the top of the mountain that did not seem to go anywhere.
The conditions were primarily machine-made snow which held up well for all the traffic. Not the best ski day ever, but not a bad one.
