Where to Go for New Years?

Seems like this season is shaping up to be the inverse of last season in the continental US, snow-wise.

Still Winter in many parts of the West

Do you know how the current base depth compares with late April in those years? Seems like this year's dumps were mostly in late winter, so there may be more left on the mountain than season snowfall would suggest?

U.S. Forest Service Lifts Advertising Ban; Vail, Jackson Hole, Mammoth, & More Announce Corporate Sponsorships

Interesting article, although I don't advocate the author's use of colorful language. Note that it was published on 4/1/2023. Link: Storm Skiing Journal

Seth Masia Interview of Bode Miller, Peak Skis, Mar.23, 2023

I didn't realize Bode Miller was so influential in ski design, over decades; impressive. It is interesting that moving the bindings forward on his Peak Skis gives better powder performance. Intuitively, I would expect that to tend to bury the tips in deep powder. Maybe Peak skis have very light...

    Southern California Ski Advice

I was checking the snow at various times and locations during the day. Early on it was not wet enough to make a snowball, but by 2 or 3 it was wet enough, off Chair 1, Chair 3 and to a lesser degree in the South Bowl. That is why I expect the snow to set up overnight if it freezes. The sun...

    Southern California Ski Advice

Baldy was good today, although they didn't start loading Chair 1 until about 10:00 or so. Everything but chair 4 was eventually opened, including South Bowl. Chair 3 was down maybe 45 minutes at around 2 PM. Somewhat dense powder early gave way to wetter snow, although South Bowl was still...

    Southern California Ski Advice

Tony, I was thinking of going up Thursday to try to ski some powder. The sun isn't forecasted to show until Thursday. Probably unrealistic expectations, given Baldy's slow response to big dumps? I'm wondering if the sun on Thursday will kill the powder before I can access it? Also, any chance...

    Heavenly, CA and NV 3/7-8/23

I use a Wahoo Roam bike computer for skiing and backpacking. Works fine, as long as the buttons are protected from accidental pressing. I carry the computer inverted in a pouch of my fanny pack atop a microfiber cloth that I use to clean lenses. Battery life is more than adequate for a full...

    Historic Mt. Baldy Snow Forecast

Mt. "Badly" has not updated their website as of 7:35 AM, but Mt. High is reporting over 5 feet of new snow in the past 24 hours: Mt High I wonder how Baldy will be by Tuesday? Liftopia had 2/28/2023 lift tickets for $64 as of this morning: Liftopia

    Historic Mt. Baldy Snow Forecast

What do you use for snow forecasts? I used to use Open Snow a few years ago and was impressed by their look ahead forecasts, which helped me successfully time trips to SLC. Sounds like they may have lost the formula?

Spring Skiing Quality mid April at Squaw/Alpine?

I'm leaning toward buying the Ikon Pass for next season. If I do, I may try to ski Squaw and/or Alpine Meadows for a couple of days some time between April 13th and 23rd, as I'll be in Fairfax, CA for a of couple weeks. Any thoughts on what to expect given this year's snow pack plus Covid-19...

    Mountain Collective/Ikon/Epic 2021-22

Loveland Pass looks interesting. I wish more ski areas accommodated overnight parking; seems cheap lodging is hard to come by, esp. when traveling alone (my ski buddy retired at 60 a few years back, even though he was skiing better than ever). I don't have a rig for overnight winter vehicle...
