    Mammoth 4/14/06-4/15/06

Marc_C: It is indeed Whitney- just taken from the NE, around Independence. Perhaps some of the associated peaks are obscuring the true summit, though. Because of the toothy summit, it's hard to make out the actual peak. I've included another pic from Lone Pine, but it's taken late in the day...

    Mammoth 4/14/06-4/15/06

I agree, the temps don't go much below 20F this time of year at Mammoth, but when a 50mph wind gust hits you and blows chunks of snow in your face while snowing, you get pretty chilly fast. Coldest I've ever been is -10F at the top of Stowe where the wind was so strong it pushed me up a small...

Before I hit Baldy on Sunday I went up to Mammoth on a planned trip with a friend. Friday was the better day. It was raining on the drive up and kept raining lightly all the way to the base of Canyon! Not the most auspicious beginning... We started off on Chair 8 where the snow was soft for...

    Baldy 4/16/06

Went to Baldy for the last time this year on Sunday for a half-day. No liftlines, bright April sun and soft snow. What more can you ask for? Good coverage for the most part. Some crust in the shady areas under the trees. South Bowl was good- even some fresh soft snow to be had. The run-out...

I use a Mac and GraphicConverter has a preview option in the Save As JPEG dialog box that not only controls the quality of the image, but also sets absolute size limits for the saved file, eliminating any time-consuming playing around with the file.

    Jackson Hole Pics

Never seen Corbet's before, only heard of it. Doesn't look as tough as I thought it would- definitely steep, but not as narrow as some stuff in Mammoth. The drop in looks like a 15foot cliff of snow- is that right?

    Mammoth Patrollers killed today

Tragic incident to be sure. Perhaps the only way to avoid it in the future is to fence off a larger area, so that the patrollers don't have to risk going near the opening too closely. GPS devices should be accurate enough to aid in this.

    Mt. Baldy (CA) 04/06/06

I thought I'd throw in my report, too. Only did a half-day, but the snow was still really good. The snow level was much lower than I thought it would be- all the way to the school in town c.4000 ft. I saw that hail-like snow, esp. at lower elevations on the parking lot runs. South Bowl...

    Baldy 04/05/06 and on...

Is anyone planning on going up to Baldy after this storm is over? It seems like it was all rain up there on Monday and Tuesday, but it seems like it might have just switched over to snow. What kind of conditions can one expect after all this rain and 6-12" of snow? I think Baldy's season is...

    Killington 3/28/06, Excellent conditions!

I don't think can even remember an April closing in the last 20 years! I remember one year they opened a strip on superstar for July 4!

    Mt. Baldy, CA - 03/30/06 - Thursday

I went to Baldy Thursday, March 30. Quick report here: http://www.skisocal.org/cgi/ski.pl/detail/28;current Had a great time as always, only minor weather and lunch gripes. Didn't see those new tacos.

    Mt. Baldy, CA 03-29-06

I agree with all those points. As for #6, I brought up a friend last year who hadn't skied in years and wasn't very experienced. The snow was amazing that day and the weather good. Even though the ticket & rental prices weren't bad, he just couldn't handle Baldy's terrain, even Emile's in...

    Mammoth Logistics Advice

    1. There's a good Von's in Town on Old Mammoth Rd. The website has a map (Vons.com). The prices are a bit higher than in major cities, but not too bad. 2. Never made the drive from Vegas, but I'd say cut through Death Valley and hook up with 395 around Lone Pine. That's where the scenery...

Taos should change it's opening and closing dates!

I agree with ChrisC. Taos does heat up in a big way during March. I was there at that time a while back, and even though their base was solid, the steep face that is positioned towards the main base area seemed to get really mushy and even a bit thin by mid-late March. Any later operation...
