Mammoth Logistics Advice

We're skiing Mammoth from April 8th-15th. Flying into Vegas and driving up. A couple of questions:
1) We're renting a house on the slopes and bringing our own food. Where's the best place en route to buy groceries? Is there a good place in the vicinity of Mammoth or should be stock up in Vegas before driving up? We'd like to avoid paying resort prices.
2) What's the best route for driving? Should we drive through Death Valley (is there a good road through it?) or stick to the East of it up 95? Might be kind of fun to see DV.
Thanks.
Jim

1. There's a good Von's in Town on Old Mammoth Rd. The website has a map (Vons.com). The prices are a bit higher than in major cities, but not too bad.

2. Never made the drive from Vegas, but I'd say cut through Death Valley and hook up with 395 around Lone Pine. That's where the scenery gets really beautiful anyway. Incidentally, the McDonald's in Lone Pine where I stop for breakfast sometimes has an incredible view of Mt. Whitney!

I just drove to Mammoth from L. V. last week and the road(374) through Death Valley from Beatty to Stovepipe wells is being repaved. So you can expect some delays and or detours.

If you are looking for supermarkets, try Bishop. I know that they have kmart and several other chain markets.

Enjoy yours
