Longest Glade in the East (?)

For on map glades, I am fairly certain you won't find a glade with more vertical drop than Cannon's Kinsman Glade. Though it may not be the "longest" in terms of mileage but it certainly is the longest in terms of vertical drop (which is where it counts in my book).

Buying AT Gear in the NE?

I buy all my BC gear online. There are shops in NE that sell BC gear but they are few and far between and don't often have big selections. Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) has stepped up recently by expanding their tele line to include AT which gets major props. North Conway has a BC store or two...

    New to the East

This board has had a "touchy" east versus west mud slinging contingent for a few years now. You will be surprised how many threads break down into petty tit for tat east versus west comments. A lot of the guys that are regulars on the board are former east coasters, though they are not the...

    New to the East

Having worked with Tech guys that came up from Long Island and would be consider upper middle class at least, I can say from experience that at least the Long Island accent is not strictly working class but white collar as well. Not quite the same as a New Yorker accent, but it drives ya insane...

    New to the East

The thing is that if you start talking like a New Yorker (how ever they manage to pronounce those two words together!), everyone else from the northeast will hear you speak and think "ahh, New Yorker." For better or worse. Just don't talk like you are from Jersey. Please.

    New to the East

Don't worry about chains. Buy a good set of snow tires and you should be all set. Not sure what type of train service is offered in New England. Perhaps something out of NYC goes to Okemo or Killington areas? Your best bet is to have a car that gets good MPG and be ready to drive to Northern...

    Jay Peak's last hurrah

They sell beer in the Stateside Lodge during the regular season.... if you like 16oz cans of swill that is. C'mon man, its spring skiing in May. Go back to your car and crack open a cooler in the lot!

    Where's Rivercoil been?

15 days by March 25th is pretty sad, hugh? Guess that shows how much Tony is wrong about this season being above average  I missed four weeks due to the injury which means I had 14 days by the end of February. Not inspiring. Managed 11 powder days though. Which suggested it was feast or...

Is the East Coast season finished? (powder-wise, that is)

Tony, I expect better than that from you. Total snowfall is not a valid indicator of how good a season is, though there is some correlation. Perhaps causation kicks in when the total snowfall is significantly above average. But one inch above average with barely more than a few inches for the...

Is the East Coast season finished? (powder-wise, that is)

Coming from someone that has actually skied the east coast this year ;) I disagree that the skiing has been "distinctly" above average. My measurements are probably different than Tony's though as Tony probably relies on trail counts. But if all trails are open and it hasn't snowed in three...

    Golfing in Salt Lake City

James, thanks for the correction on the slope rating, forgot that came into play! Still can't compare tour setup to regular setup though for those pros barely making par (or do they adjust slope for the "pros"? I wouldn't say angry. Just hard on the eyes. And it isn't just the avatars. I've...

    Golfing in Salt Lake City

Admin is right that golf is a "game" in which a player tries to get the lowest score possible. When playing the game in competition with others, it is elevated to sport. Just like skiing is an outdoor activity that is only elevated to sport in competition. However, I have been drawn out to...

    Advice on new boards

I was going to say Fischer Watea 94 until you wrote considering an AT binding. That would be a pretty heavy setup for BC'ing. Tough finding a good light weight 90-100 waist ski that is beefy enough to destroy crud/mank and also get you safely across the groomers. I have been considering the...

Even at Mad River Glen, they just don't get it

And after all that.... MRG STILL has more blue square bumps today than any other mountain in New England that I am aware of. According to today's trail report, the following blue squares are not groomed: Quacky, Wren, Chipmunk, and Waterfall. Not bad but they did groom out more than they usually...

Cold Sunday - More Shelter at Jay or Burke?

For their latest version at least. Their default theme for the last version set the standard.

Cold Sunday - More Shelter at Jay or Burke?

I find Tony's PST Quarterbacking of the East interesting even if not always completely on target. You gotta hand it to Tony though... very few West Coasters are as knowledgable about the East as Tony, even for actually skiing the East only a few times. No, it isn't Tony but rather the new...

Cold Sunday - More Shelter at Jay or Burke?

Burke owns Jay on groomers. Better trails and better conditions. Less traffic so good groomed conditions last longer into the day. Burke is much more sheltered from the wind than Jay and less prone to wind hold. Even when the summit quad goes down, you still have surface lift that gets you to...

    No Powderfreak TRs?

But then you have to go into each sub-forum rather than having all the sub-forums you want to view on one page. I bookmark search.php?search_id=newposts. vBulletin lets you "exclude" forums you don't want from the newposts search. Having to go through multiple pages of forums is inconvenient. It...

    No Powderfreak TRs?

+1 The new format layout and aesthetics are horrible on the eyes. I can't get used to it. Not sure if phpBB has a New Post link that can eliminate certain forums. I always go to new posts (bookmarked) but the non-east forums are making it harder to wad through to the stuff I want to read. I...
