    Whiteface Report 2/18

Lookout Mountain is far from complete, despite what is shown on the trail map. They barely got the Wilmington Trail open in time for the season. 1) Hoyt's High was cut but was never finished. There are still tree cuttings from two summers ago on that trail, and some large boulders. They...

    Vermont Snow Updates 2008-09

Whiteface is reporting 14'' overnight, although it has been snowing all day and total accumulations are likely more at this point. Nice report here: http://forums.alpinezone.com/40063-whit ... -08-a.html

    New Whiteface Terrain

In general, the forests on Whiteface are VERY dense. The forests only get more dense with elevation and eventually become impenetrable as red spruce becomes the predominant species. There are some exceptions, however. As illustrated in the above photo, there are veins of hardwoods that...

    Slides open at Whiteface

I was wrong in my recollection. Principally, I was rebutting the "most years they don't even open". As Sandy put it-- "some years, they have not opened". There's a difference between the two statements.

    Slides open at Whiteface

I can't think of a year where they didn't open at all. Of course, there was a year or two when they only opened for a few days out of the season, while another season they were open something like 14 days. I'm guessing the average is about 7 days per season. The best chance of skiing the...

Whiteface 4/6 - another spectacular day

They also cut a long intermediate run that can be seen from the base. There are two more trails that have yet to be cut (beside the glades). Here's a good pic that shows the pod (intermediate run on the far right side of the ridge):

    Dacks BC, Sunday 4/6

The SE slide is one of my favorites! Sounds like it is skiing well this season. Check out this trip report from 3/29 posted on viewsfromthetop: http://www.viewsfromthetop.com/forums/s ... hp?t=21635

    Slides open at Whiteface

The Slides opened today (Sat.). Due to yesterday's snowfall they are requiring avi beacons, probes, and shovels. I'm sure they were skiing great today for the few that got to venture in.

    Whiteface NY 17th,18th

While I disagree with you about the variety, I do think the mountain lacks in the bump category. The limited trail mileage doesn't help any. There are a few places that I know of but certainly not to the extent of a mountain like Gore. An abundance of thick balsam forest, less active pruners...

    Dacks 2/16

I think those pics were taken from Phelps Mountain. (Am I right, skimore?) There's some nice skiing on that mountain if you know where to look. Pic 1) Angel Slides on Wright Peak Pic 2) Giant Pic 3) Mount Colden Pic 4) Mount Marcy

    Tuesday/Wednesday Storm

It snowed lightly from the midstation up all day at Whiteface and there was no wind to speak of. A bit of light drizzle at the base (despite the fact that it was snowing a mile up the road in the notch). Great conditions.

    Wind and Whiteface

Wind holds are a definite possibility for Sunday into Monday. The summit is not yet open for the season, although the projected totals should at least open up Paron's and Follies-- possibly more. Tuesday would be the best bet for open terrain and low probability of wind holds.

New Year family ski trip destination recommendations?

While I love Gore, it is a little slow-going when it comes to opening terrain. Whiteface is a better choice. In recent years, Whiteface has been good at getting its key trails open quickly due to large investments in its snowmaking and pumping capacity. It should be even better this year...

Gone into Powder Mode- This is gonna be unfrigginreal

While there might not be a lot of supporters of Bretton Woods here, you certainly would get a variety recommendations that are outside of Northern Vermont and rightly so. There is some fantastic skiing elsewhere despite what statistics say.

Gone into Powder Mode- This is gonna be unfrigginreal

When this storm is all said and done skiers of Cannon, Whiteface, Gore, Sugarloaf won't care what is going on in Northern Vermont because they ALL will being skiing well. There is sick terrain at these mountains. Ohh... and Whiteface and Gore already have a good natural base for glades. I...

    Whiteface conditions

Yes, contrary to popular belief, WF does have some great skiing to offer!

    Whiteface conditions

I hope jasoncapecod went to WF because this week the snow has piled up. The mountain has been getting nailed with lake effect and clippers. Furthermore, The SLIDES opened today. Aside from last weekend, conditions have been remarkable considering the weather in the northeast this season.
