If a westerner moved to New England....

Ok, thanks for the reality check! First of all, thank you for all your opinions, I really appreciate it! Sure, I might not ever go through with it, but it's always intriguing to me to get input on a hair-brained idea. I do think we will come visit New England, and probably within the...

If a westerner moved to New England....

Ok, the chances of me moving out of Idaho are slim to none, however I've been intrigued by New England lately, mainly because I haven't been there since I was 10, and would love to go back and visit. The wife and I are shooting for next year sometime, probably in late summer/early fall. (would...

After that incident in 1994, yes... however I think it was somewhat limited before then, even though they knew CO2 had increased after the 1989 quakes.

An acquaintance/friend of both TonyC and I (who was a forest ranger at the time) nearly died in that area back in 1994. Here's an article that was written at the time: https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1994-11-27-mn-2187-story.html

Generally true, however we usually have to get a pet sitter if we both go. Not always easy, as our sitter is often booked out. Having said that, Bend is pretty rare to have deep snow on the ground, so there's the option of taking our travel trailer and camping just outside town, usually on the...

That was such a great year. I remember taking a few runs at Waterman around Halloween. (cheated, as I was in my USFS uniform and Todd let me go up for a run as he was working on the lift). Re Bachelor: I went ahead and picked up 4 packs to Bachelor for the wife and I for next season. Although...

Yes, it was relatively common at Wolf Creek, even sometimes in winter. The deserts really only need a strong surface wind to get blowing dust, even in winter if they are even remotely dry. I'm sure it's been happening for eons, however it's been getting a lot of attention in recent years as more...

Is the browning snow entirely from thinning coverage, or is that some dust? I know in the Southern CO mountains we would get dust in early spring from wind storms, mainly from AZ. It would create some dirty snow, but also speed up melting some. I would think it might be tougher to get dust in...

This. The snow is often inconsistent and grabby. much more likely to catch edges than in winter snow, too.. I have had a few nasty falls over the years in spring, and I know a few others that have had some bad injuries during that time as well. I wouldn't attribute crashes with other skiers as...

This past winter was by far the best season I've had since I moved to Idaho back in 2019. In fact, it's probably have been the best season I've had in a decade or more. Part of that was the snow of course, but I also lost 30 lbs this past summer/fall, which has made a huge difference. In...

TonyC. I've gotten the 4 pack ($399) a couple times in the ~6 yrs we've lived here, and I usually make the call less than a week out, (unless the wife comes - petsitter, etc). We try to go once in midwinter, and once in spring, usually before the seasonal closures if we can help it. As I said...

This is way more of a report than neccesary for a quick 2 day jaunt in pretty crappy conditions, but here it is anyway. So I got a new snowboard at the end of season deals, and thought I'd take a peak at Mt. Bachelor's page to see if they had any deals going on so I could find an excuse to...

Young Males Keep Falling From Chairlifts Out West

The man from Colorado that fell in December, has died. https://www.cpr.org/2025/05/08/keystone-chairlift-death-safety-requirements/ It's really only a matter of time before it becomes a law, I believe.

Looks like fun, as usual. Bachelor in Spring is almost as good as Mammoth. I got a new snowboard last week for 50% off, and was prepared to wait until next year to use it. However, I saw Bachelor had a deal on tix for next week (12-16th ), $49 day, AND I got a holiday inn for the same rate...

My mistake. I was only comparing them to the Socal Transverse. There are actually several W-E facing mountain ranges across North Amercia, but for some reason most only consider the Uinta's and San Gabriels/San Bernardinos true transverse ranges.

In regards to our previous exchange.... This is why I feel like the idea of no war/conflict is much closer than it might have been previously. This is a much different Trump than his first term.
