Cannon Mt, NH - 1/28 First Skier down TRAMLINE

You're crazy. :) That is, unless you meant March 1st, 2006.

    Jay Peak Jan. 29-30

I haven't been to Jay yet this year, but I've noticed that extremely annoying tendency to list a trail as "open" on the snow report, and then you get there and it's closed. Somehow this just pisses me off far more than it would to just list the thing as "closed" in the first place.

    Mad River Glen, VT 1/28-1/29/05

I skied at mrg on friday and saturday. Word of the day both days was "bony." Things were scratchy more or less everywhere. Not so bad as to be unskiable (and every trail was open) but bad enough that it really affected the skiing. Lots of exposed rocks and some ice patches between bumps as...

    camping at tuckermans

There are probably other folks here that can give you better information, but what I remember is that you're allowed to camp anywhere you want in the WMNF without any kind of permit, so long as you're 1/4 mile from a trail and 200 yards from water (and in summer below treeline...). This rules...

    Mad River Glen, VT 1/7/05-1/8/05

Objectively speaking, the conditions are terrible. But -- things aren't nearly as bad as I had feared. And I had an absolute blast skiing this weekend, and was filled with hope for the rest of the season. So here's the report: I headed up to MRG on Friday morning, scared. It had...

Ski wax - to scrape or not to scrape

Just want to point out also: unless you're trying to clean the ski base, you should let the wax cool completely before you scrape. You can also just omit scraping entirely -- all the excess wax will come off in the first run or two anyway, so unles you're racing it's not really necessary to...

    Ski repair in boston area

Thanks for the warning -- I was actually pretty convinced I'd just acquired a new fencepost when I first saw the damage. But the ski is a rossignol viper S from a few years ago and apparently should be repairable -- at least according to a this guy I know who's some kind of big cheese at rossi...

    Ski repair in boston area

I'm hoping to draw on the experience of folks here for some advice: I've managed to take advantage of the recent fabulous (ha!) conditions to experience a new first in my skiing: I've torn a big section of the metal edge of my ski right out. Supposedly this is repairable, but requires...

    Sunday River - Sunday 12/26

Does anyone know just how common this sort of thing is relative to deaths from people skiing ungroomed/off-trail? The ratio of injuries between the two? The past couple of weeks I've been skiing a lot out west on hard groomers (no snow elsewhere, unfortunately!). And I certainly felt much...

    Northstar, CA 12/24/04

Another report from my ill-timed trip out west: Northstar on 12/24 was much better than you'd expect given that the last weather event was heavy rain followed by a solid freeze, and that more than 2 weeks previously. Anything off-trail was cut-up and uneven and frozen solid -- unskiable, as...

    Kirkwood, CA 12/26/04

I just returned back east from a trip out to the tahoe area (perfect timing, as usual). By now conditions are presumably radically different. But I was at kirkwood on 12/26 and here was the status: The wall was closed (on wind hold) all day, as were all the backside lifts. Skied off the...

Hunter Lode Mining Claim, CO 11-10-04

I have to admit that I'm insanely jealous on seeing those pictures...and even more jealous that you could take them in the morning and be at work by afternoon. But keep them coming...at least those of us who are humble, not by virtue by but lack of mountains, can live vicariously.

What is your favorite "Classic Narrow Eastern Trail&quo

I didn't have a 2nd car so tried tuckerbrook the hard way: skied it, and down at the bottom realized it was a long walk in ski boots back to the lift! Fortunately was able to hitch back to cannon with no problem, but not recommended! A fantastic report -- thanks for pointing it out.

    Monoski

This looks completely bizarre. Does anyone know what the point of a monoski is? I know it's different and that might be enough for some people. But are there any aspects where its performance is better than "normal" skis, or things you can do on a monoski that you can't do on skis?

What is your favorite "Classic Narrow Eastern Trail&quo

Let's not forget face chutes/tuckerman's chute to everglade at Jay for 100 vertical feet of western skiing followed by some truly eastern fun.

What is your favorite "Classic Narrow Eastern Trail&quo

My favorite would have to be 20th Hole at mad river. Narrow lines through beautiful forest, twisting through the trees. There are also some great streambeds at MRG which make fabulous twisty gullies to ski. Lower antelope at mad river is fantastic as well -- and particularly great for...

    Ski Area Wish List

There'll be no shortage of FTOers who are locals at MRG, and others like me who aren't really local but just ski there a lot! But the great thing about that place is that literally every single patch of woods on the mountain (and I mean on the mountain, not just in the ski area!) has lines cut...

    Home ski area?

Mad River Glen Who cares if it's a 3 1/2 hour drive? I'm hoping for them to open by mid-december, and to stay open till early april. But when there's snow, it can't be beat. When there's not, there's always Jay.

    The ultimate Alaskan heli-ski adventure?

It is a lot of money, way too much for me. But to be fair they're talking about attempting first descents every day...it's not really fair to compare this to a standard heliskiing operation.

    Ski Area Wish List

Places I've never been that I'd like to hit this year: Burke Sugarloaf Would like to ski Sugarbush, but I have a pass at MRG and can never bring myself to shell out 60 bucks when I can ski next door for free. Would also like to check out whiteface and other NY resorts but that's far enough...
