Wachusett, Hunter, Snow and Skier Visits

Windham is always scheduled to close after the first Sunday in April, whether the hill is completely covered or partially bare. Not sure what Vail's policy with Hunter is. In April, you see the snowmaking difference these days between Belle and Plattekill. The latter melts out far more quickly...

Wachusett, Hunter, Snow and Skier Visits

Yes to both I've had many excellent late March/early April days (which is shoulder season for the East Coast) at Belleayre and Windham.

Vail Pulls Plug on Epicski Forum

I always wondered if a tech geek could've carried out a quasi hostile takeover of the Epicski content and renamed the forum so the brand conflict with VR was gone. NY Ski Forum and FTO were both moved from obsolete hosting software to Xen Foro (Harv's was especially obsolete!). It was 2017 so...

Vail Pulls Plug on Epicski Forum

I only went through maybe a dozen threads so it's a small sample size; however, none were abbreviated, including long discussions across numerous pages. For example, RIP Epicski. All 31 pages are there/see screen grab below.

Vail Pulls Plug on Epicski Forum

Yesterday, I was skimming through a number of Epicski threads and trip reports that were archived on the Internet Archive Wayback Machine. All of the links that I tried via the forum homepage worked. Good to know that the extensive content didn't go poof as feared at the time.

Wachusett, Hunter, Snow and Skier Visits

Windham gets maybe ten inches more a year than Hunter, if that. They're both very snowmaking-dependent.

Wachusett, Hunter, Snow and Skier Visits

I learned it 20 years ago on the TGR forum. They used it in a positive way, not mocking or scornful. It's been seven years since my memorable evening of slednecking at Auron (scroll to bottom). Would love to do it again.

Wachusett, Hunter, Snow and Skier Visits

When Plattekill receives snow originating from Lake Ontario, I recall a few times reading the words "rogue bands of lake effect," which would seem to indicate that specific conditions need to line up along with a bit of luck. Such a shame that the only people in the Tug Hill region who benefit...

    Cannon Mountain Tram ($30M?)

Nice pix, especially the one at the top from the early 1940s. I've mentioned before that Cannon holds a special place in my heart as it was where my wife and I went on our inaugural destination ski visit during the season of 2000-01. Here we are framed by Mount Lafayette's above-treeline peak.

    Paywalled Articles

Grandstanding ^^ Given FTO's low numbers of active members (that you've noted to me many times), I don't believe that my post above is endangering the livelihood of many writers.

Wachusett, Hunter, Snow and Skier Visits

Are we buying that number? When I used to ski frequently at Belle, the daily reports always seemed to be accurate (sometimes under-reported) and they usually added up to the 130-150 range.

    Xeriscape In Desert Climates

Agreed. I wouldn't want to give that up and be exposed to brutal sun and nosy neighbors. :icon-lol: How do we feel about the plants right alongside the pool? That would be a easy place to reduce the "cluttered" feel.

Pandemic Disney World, FL, Aug. 21, 27, 2020

Even at that young age, I recall thinking how odd it was that they built a huge theme resort, including a futuristic monorail (a big thing for this train geek), in the middle of a swamp. I was also fascinated by the Circle-Vision 360 theater that used nine cameras and screens arranged in a...

    Cannon Mountain Tram ($30M?)

@jimk, when did they update the tram car at Snowbird? I rode one of the old-school cars at Walmendinghorn in 2022 -- built in 1966 and still in service!

Pandemic Disney World, FL, Aug. 21, 27, 2020

The internet says that Walt Disney bought 27,000 dirt cheap acres in an alligator-infested swamp "so the corporation could exercise more control than it had in Anaheim, where businesses quickly crowded around Disneyland. Florida officials OTOH were very cooperative, giving Disney near-total...

A Love Letter to Dog Days in the North Country…

Yikes. It's too late for this expenditure; however, I recommend getting one of those third-party warranties where you pay approx. $10-15 per month/per appliance that's looking dodgy (we got ours through the utility company PSE&G for our washing machine and oven). They cover all parts and labor...
