    Whiteface 2013-01-10

The New York state "ski day" offer of $10 lift tickets on the 10th was incentive for a 2 day mini trip into New York & Vermont. It was also the first time in years that I would be skiing with both my youngest daughter & niece - both having now finished university. (Not counting day trips to...

Whiteface NY : March 14, 2012 – Spring Break Sucks!!!

Patrick, I couldn't agree more! I went out to Whiteface on the March 21st for the start of a quick 3 day swing into NY & VT. The picture is of the top of Paron's Run - interesting concept of what constitutes an "open" run... Upper Skyward was better but a badly twisted knee early on...

    Vermont Snow Updates 2010-11

Bang on regarding the mid-winter conditions! I stopped at Stowe last Friday (2011-03-25 - 1/2 price ski & ride with The Point) on my way back from what was supposed to be some spring skiing in New Hampshire. It had snowed 1" at the hill the night before and was snowing throughout the day...

    Midwinter thaw

Just got back from a Vermont/NH road trip with my better half. MRG Monday (2011-02-14) was spring conditions. Bumps were nice & soft and the snow got a little sticky close to the bottom. They got light fluries up top during the day. Drove over to NH in the late afternoon and the Vermont...

    TR - Ste Anne (01/25-27), Sutton (01/28-29)

"I'll be on a whirlwind tour of the Townships starting Sunday. Too bad the 2-4 feet that are going to hit the Washington DC area this weekend can't find its way north." The Environment Canada website is calling for periods of snow Sunday and Monday. (http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/city/pag...

    TR - Ste Anne (01/25-27), Sutton (01/28-29)

Picked a heck of a week to go skiing in Quebec with my better half... Monday morning(2010-01-25), slopeside condo Ste Anne - pouring rain. Trail report says 22 runs open - They lie like a cheap rug!!! (unless you count the shared lead in top 300' of a 2500' run as counting the run open.) Not...

The best time to ski Alberta/BC in an El Nino year?

I think you're right regarding the current economy - I've already received an e-mail from Winter Park about getting a 3rd day free on a 3 day booking. It looks to be shaping up as a buyers market for ski resort travel this winter. You've certainly given me some things to ponder. Thanks...

The best time to ski Alberta/BC in an El Nino year?

If we were doing our usual driving trips to the eastern US I would wait till after Christmas to book. It's a trade off - I'll get decent pricing on "ski show specials" and will be able to plan the extended family visits well in advance, but I take the chance on snow. The good thing is being an...

The best time to ski Alberta/BC in an El Nino year?

Thanks for the information. Looks like I'll set the target date for late March. (Way too cheap to pay Christmas rates anyway.) This gives me two months of planning time before the Toronto Ski Show, where I'm likely to book the trip.

The best time to ski Alberta/BC in an El Nino year?

The weather channel says it's shaping up to be an El Nino year... With that in mind, I'm planning on taking my wife out to either Alberta or BC for a ski trip to celebrate our 30th anniversary and was wondering when would be the best time weather wise to plan for a week? We'll be passing...

Intrawest in trouble - Tremblant might be sold off

With few exceptions Quebec is pricey as a destination and Intrawest Tremblant is flat out greedy. Intrawest Tremblant has perfected the art of separating a skier from their money with development surcharges, the aforementioned cost of food, charging people not staying in their properties for a...

    Classic Eastern ski trails

I enjoy the narrow, winding "classic" trails as well. Haven't done any Maine skiing yet but here are some Vt, NH & NY trails in no particular order that you'd likely enjoy: (Some blues, some blacks, all narrow, lots of bends, lots of double fall lines - I'm not including glades in this...)...

    Cannon Trip Report 2/1/09

Cannon to Burke is an hour - I93 to I91 North, get off at Lyndon, follow the signs. If you're trying for old school head for the mid-Burke lodge rather than the base lodge. Looking at your target list, you should think about adding Sutton in Quebec to the list.

    Road trip - Jan 2009

The first of what is hopefully 2 road trips this year. Left Oshawa, ON at 4:45 am Sunday, skied Burke Sunday afternoon. ($18pp) Setup base at Woodwards in Lincoln, NH - taking advantage of the $250, 7 day midweek pass. Monday was Waterville Valley (2 for 1) - Sunny but cold. Trails on the...

    Sunday - Feb. 1 2 for 1 Cannon anyone?

My wife & I were waiting in line at 8:30 Thursday - we were probably on the 10th chair or so... Here's a shot of of the line - There was a wind-blown crust of about 2" on the snow near the top of the mountain with the light fluffy stuff underneath. I spent most of the morning experiencing...

Cold Sunday - More Shelter at Jay or Burke?

Left Oshawa 4:45am - made the mid-Burke chalet just after noon. Cold, but not insanely so. My wife & I both agree that we were way more sheltered than at Jay. Great start to the week!

Cold Sunday - More Shelter at Jay or Burke?

Patrick: Thanks for the money savings tips for the kids - but my youngest is now in her 2nd year at university. (She's teaching skiing on weekends.) We did take advantage of the Ontario Grade 5 pass program for the very first year we started "family" trips - back in 2000. Over the years I've...

Cold Sunday - More Shelter at Jay or Burke?

Thanks to all for the info. Patrick - I've actually skied Sutton, Orford and Owls Head & Bromont - I just figure that Burke or Jay gets most of the driving and the border crossing behind me. That way I can ski, and then head directly to the motel. In fact, the glades at Burke really remind...

Cold Sunday - More Shelter at Jay or Burke?

Anthony: Thanks for the sympathy and information. The drive starts in Oshawa - unfortunately a location that's 5 1/2 hrs from anything over 700' vertical. For the past 8 years it's been a family tradition for dad to drive through the night while mom & daughter sleep. Sometimes the worst...
