    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

Snowbird has very similar altitude/exposure parameters as Mammoth, and it's January with low sun angle. I have no doubt that LCC skiing over the next 10 or more days with no new snow will be just fine. However that forecast is a recipe for a nasty inversion down in SLC. That will make Jimk...

    Monitoring Cardiac Health

Is that lipoprotein(a)? I got an e-mail from someone who read this thread. His lucky location and immediate treatment meant no heart muscle damage. Lipo A is genetic and its test is not part of the the standard lipid/cholesterol panel. The correspondent saw an analogy to EMSC's cardiac...

    Northern VT: what a start

like Snow Ridge and McCauley average over 200 inches, don't they? Mt. Bohemia averages 255. Also those upstate NY areas at no more than 4-1 length to vertical ratio do not need as much snow to resurface as steeper mountains do.

    Europe 2025/26

OpenSnow forecasts weather at the average of base and peak elevations for every resort. Alagna's base is very low, drags down that average. I was wondering with favorable forecasts for Cervinia and Saas-Fee if Zermatt is getting snow. Zermatt getting Hohtalli/Stockhorn skiable is what will...

I think those Saulire couloirs directly overlook pistes and thus might have to be controlled.

    Europe 2025/26

When you raised this issue in June, I sent Joel an e-mail, results discussed here. Recall I determined that there are 3 possible descriptions of any calendar month snowfall posted below the calendar. Obviously method #1 should be used when possible. But that requires a human expending time...

    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

Hopefully you have a car for any time off to commute to BCC or LCC. Forecasters are unanimous there will be zero new snow in CA, UT or CO before then. It could be worse. Early next week it's going to rain in Washington and B.C. to over 6,000 feet.

The Berkshires are in that under 200 inch category, so not surprising.

Article on the "underbelly" at ski resorts

75% clickbait. It is well known that drug use in the USA and certainly among the moneyed class peaked in the late 1970's. And you'll never convince me that sexual harassment was lower then. It wasn't reported as often in those benighted days. The true parts, which are old news to us here...

    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

California percent of normal snowfall moved from 40% Christmas Eve to 71% New Year's Eve to 80% now. Utah percent of normal snowfall moved from 32% Christmas Eve to 37% New Year's Eve to 62% now. Utah now looks similar to 2011-12 and 2017-18. The upcoming mid-January dry spell :icon-lol: will...

Young Males Keep Falling From Chairlifts Out West

That's one reason my daypack is small. It will fit over above the back of most chairlifts. The fancy new Doppelmayrs like chairs 1 and 16 have higher seatbacks and are the exception. Snowave absolutely hits the nail on the head here. Thus my conclusion in post #38 above.

    Northern VT: what a start

I would guess that northern Vermont can get large enough storms for true resurfacing. I'll defer to locals as to how often that might occur. For areas averaging under 200 inches natural snow, those events are very rare. This is why I usually observe that Big Bear

    Northern VT: what a start

Yesterday's rain/freeze event knocked Jay down to 54% open today. Jay still leads the U.S. in season-to-date snowfall but conditions obviously suck now. It's not going to snow a flake at Mammoth for at least the next 10 days, but I'm confident it will still be 100% open with excellent...

Young Males Keep Falling From Chairlifts Out West

New this season on one tower each of Mammoth's chairs 1&2: This is of course a suggestion not a mandate, and there was no obvious increase in use on those lifts. We all recall a few years ago when the more intimidating triple chairs 22 and 23 finally got retrofit safety bars. Chair 25 from...

I can't resist linking the highlight day of Adam's 11-year-old season. Reviewing that TR, I listed 15 runs off the top and chair 22, which I probably exceeded only on May 18, 2013.

    Mammoth, Jan. 4-9, 2026

Friday was clear, started cold at 12F, warmed to low 20’s midday. The upslope wind was still confined to the top. Mammoth typically does superb and extensive grooming for day 2 after new snow. We were skiing by 8:40 with two quick runs on Stump Alley corduroy. We skied Broadway past the...

Tour of Vail Tahoe resorts January 5-7, 2026

2005-06 was also Mammoth's record high attendance season before Alterra took over and no longer will release them. There is debate whether that might have been exceeded in 2022-23. The argument in favor is that Mammoth had 5 feet of snow by November 9 and closed August 6. The argument against...

    Mammoth, Jan. 4-9, 2026

We drove Tuesday afternoon, hit Sherwin Grade around sunset. Cloud bank below White Mountains: About 10 minutes later, view of Mammoth, Minarets and another cloud bank: SoCal was far from the only one on a school holiday week at Mammoth. The town was very busy at dinnertime, and when we...

    Brundage Mtn, ID 1/7/26

Brundage base of 5,840 is high for its region. I'd assume rain issues like this December are very rare. Schweitzer is still only half open with its base at only 4,000.
