    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

Per Mammoth website dated 10:35AM, Canyon Lodge was not closed but chair 16 was (probably wind), forcing skiers at Canyon to use 17 and then 4 to cross the lower mountain. Chairs 1 and 2 were reported open, along with 8 and 15 going the other way from Canyon. Only these lifts open on a weekend...

My personal experience at Niseko in 2016 mirrors ChrisC’s. Powder competition out the gates was still far less than in North America. I do not know for a fact that it has degraded since then. And yes the ski fall lines are longer than at the other Hokkaido areas we skied. When was ChrisC there...

    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

Sometimes patience is in order. Mammoth’s upper lifts have not been open since before the Christmas storm. Hopefully we get a shot later this week. Anyone who follows Utah skiing should know that the recent modest storms were not going to open that much more terrain. So those lines were no...

    Japan 2026

I’m glad I got to Niseko in 2011 and 2016. I don’t know how much crowds might have increased, but a late opening like that pic will always bring out a lot of pent up demand. I’d expect similar when Utah, Colorado and Austria finally get significant snow. Sbooker has it right. There are tons...

Both WePowder and Luke Stone of OpenSnow mention the possibility of that big dump from the west 5 days out, but don’t quote anything specific until it gets closer.

The disparity between Schweitzer and Whitefish continues. Schweitzer has improved from 3% open Christmas Eve, but is still at only 41%. Fernie is up to 75% while Whitefish is 94% open.

Not sure Vallee Blanche will be open this early. You should inquire before committing as many as 5 days, in view of the fact that the Grands-Montets upper tram is still not rebuilt. I'd say 2-3 days, mainly to check out the mind blowing scenery, best viewed from Brevant-Flegere. Given that...

Article: Why Is Mount Baldy, CA So Deadly For Hikers?

I've hiked Devil's Backbone 3x in summer. It's the easiest way to the the top: ride chair 1 to the Notch, then 2,200 vertical in 3.3 miles, first part of the hike is under chair 4. The trail is well traveled, not very rocky. Yes there are dropoffs on each side but it's not that narrow for a...

We have done that drive or a close variation in 2022 and 2024. This type of drive is not uncommon in the Alps if you want to chase the best conditions. But it's not so much of an option if you are headed to Utah or Colorado in the next few weeks.

    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

Not at all. It's all desert at 4,000 feet or lower until the last 30 miles. And it's easier now from L.A. than when I started skiing there in late 1970's. Only 15 miles are two lane now vs. 125 miles then. Coming from the leeward side there is often no snow on the ground at all until the 3...

    Northern VT: what a start

The Monday freezing rain knocked trail counts down a little at the northern areas today vs. Dec. 24. Jay 89% vs. 95% Smuggs 27% vs. 47% Stowe 63% vs. 85% Sugarbush 50% vs. 92% Whiteface 59% vs. 75% Bits and pieces of new snow may improve skiing over the next few days. Anyone know why Smuggs...

    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

Targhee's track record remains intact per this quote from Powderchaser Steve two days ago: There's little relief in the worst regions. Alta's 60 inches snowfall is the worst since 1976-77 and Utah (37% of normal snowfall) like Front Range Colorado (47%) has the least terrain open at New Year's...

Yes, Mammoth is like the Alps; better not to be there during big storms. We plan to drive Tuesday and ski Wednesday-Friday. No guarantees on that; weather could still be unsettled

Mammoth is in limited lower mountain only operation today due to the memorial service for Cole Murphy. I am not aware that the top of the mountain has been open at any time yet since the big storm yet. The consolidator website SnoCountry generally lists the maximum that has been open in recent...

Both of you are wrong. The sign is for the Ontario Mills Mall. See Google Earth pic below: Both sets of snow covered mountains in Jimk's pic are between 8,000 and 8,300 feet. You can see from the yellow ruler that the straight line view from Ontario Mills to the top of Baldy at 10K goes...

Tesla and Elon Musk Evolution Since 2017

Yes. Tesla thought the new 4680 battery could be made more energy intensive to yield 500 miles EPA range, which would be a workable 250 for towing. But the production Cybertuck battery is no more efficient than the ones in the other Tesla's, so with all that weight the EPA range is 325 miles...

Resort Snowfall Reporting: When to start? (Jackson Hole)

Subtract the 17 from October to get a realistic 98 inches. Similarly subtract October's 14 from Alta to get 60. And subtract October's 29 from Targhee to get 109.

If that forecast holds, I would not expect the top of Mammoth to be much Jan. 3-6. On another note, I have always wondered how these pictures get taken of a snow capped Baldy backdrop to downtown L.A. I can get that kind of view briefly from the Santa Monica Freeway but not a great place for a...

    Northern VT: what a start

Yes, the rainy events appear to me to be weak, because they have not knocked down the trail counts as much as I usually see when monitoring the weekend reports for this table. ChrisC, what AI do you use? The summaries seem quite accurate. I see more variable quality in whatever James uses...

Mott Canyon opening is the best sign of decent coverage at Heavenly. I think there may still be issues at Tahoe lower elevations. Gunbarrel and East Bowl were not mentioned. Still I’d guess 2/3 of Heavenly is in good shape now.
