    Mammoth, CA December 15-16, 2025

I appreciate the above TR as I am still without my laptop and first priority when I get home tonight will the the mid-December Season No Progress Report. These are quite unusual conditions for Mammoth. I was here at the same time in 2011-12 to demo and buy boots and the lower mountain...

Young Males Keep Falling From Chairlifts Out West

I’m convinced it will take a formal law like Vermont. Bar use is very low out here, way under 50% with no footrest and not much more than that with a footrest. For most of us it’s habit and indifference, and if there’s a formal rule I’d expect 90% compliance.

Young Males Keep Falling From Chairlifts Out West

More ammunition for Stuart. It’s hard to argue against using the bars but many people just don’t think about it in western resorts, as I still noticed at Mammoth today.

    Svalbard Ski & Sail - April 25-May 4, 2025

Welcome to FTO, claurel! Very impressive post. Liz and I are aware of these Svalbard trips because Ice Axe Expeditions does them most years and we are on their mailing list due the Antarctic cruise we did with them in 2011. You may also be aware of Lyngen Lodge in northern Norway, which has...

    Northern VT: what a start

I assume not. Please read detail link from Powderfreak at the end of post #3 in this thread. The best we can do is my average of upper lower numbers at the end of the season. In season best guess is 90% of the upper that Jay reports.

    Northern VT: what a start

See MarzNC’s Wolf Creek report just posted. There have been only two meaningful snow producing storms in the western US so far. Wolf Creek was the only area to get snow from both of them.

    Northern VT: what a start

Wolf Creek. I’ll let MarzNC comment on whether that’s reality.

2,000 vertical one block from my house, but too low for skiing unfortunately. :icon-lol:

683 vertical is not so bad when it looks like that! I assume Stu is StormSkiJournal Stuart Winchester.

    Mountain High, Dec. 12, 2025

That is my view as well. But it seems the young SoCal snowboarders don't show up until after 11AM. Also, this early in the season the park features they love are minimal. This was my 3rd time, all with the similar attendance. I took those pics to illustrate the low skier density. After I...

    Vail, Dec. 12, 2025

Paul ventured over to Vail yesterday and said that Christmas is going to be a disaster. Avanti and the two lifts out of mid-Vail are the only ones open for skiing. You must download Lionshead gondola at the end of the day because it hasn't been cold often enough to make enough snow at its...

    Best US Ski Towns

I first used the term At any rate, whatever you call us, we remain the dominant demographic that generated income and success possibly beyond Dave McCoy's wildest dreams when he started out. Or maybe not. He owned the land that became the village and also an overhead easement for the gondola...

Good point. Same situation as areas local to Seattle, Denver and Salt Lake.

    Mountain High, Dec. 12, 2025

Today I drove to Mt. High to refresh my age 70 pass. Similar to the last two years, I hung around and skied the 2 WRODs that were open. Chisholm: Wyatt: Borderline is the park but features are currently modest with limited snow. Here's the natural coverage on Headwall, the site of Liz'...

So Whistler visitation is up since Vail took over? I'm sure no official numbers are released.

    Best US Ski Towns

When Tahoe has no snow, like now? Or when the snow is much better at Mammoth, essentially anytime after April 1. I notice Ikon luring more Bay Area/Tahoe skiers to Mammoth in the spring than before. But only one of those resorts makes any effort for that to happen. During the...

    3 Vallées, FR: 03/12/23

In 2022 Liz and I were at Club Med Val Thorens, which is ski-in ski-out and extremely self contained. Liz explored the village one afternoon and came back to get me as she found the yellow ski jacket I've been wearing most winter ski days since. It drove her nuts that I did not have a left...
