Taos Ski Valley 11/29/04 13" Powder

Cool ! I love Taos. Is Abe's in Arroyo Seco (across the road from the Abominable Snowmansion) open? :P

Why not ?!?! Everyone else does! Seriously, I was only making a broad general statement. Meanwhile, cut 'n pasted from another discussion list, someone has informed us as follows: Of course, ASC didn't put this online. Some Kmart skiers scanned the paper map...

As fun as it is to bash Killington - and they do deserve it at times - ya' can't blame them if they are behind. We've had a lotta' rain lately. One of the lousiest early season days I remember was in November 1989, right before Thanksgiving. It was so bad, they let people free for ski ....I'm...

Yeah, good 'ol Bloodshed :P . That's what a Killington ski instructor used to call it. Yeah, I went to work, today :( . This was even worse than the skiing at Wachusett the other morning. Damn, I'm having a compelling season, thus far. Let's see ..... Killington JPEG #007 8) , that's...

Once again, it was prime time for the Thanksgiving Day Club. On Thanksgiving morning at 07:30:00 EST, I met Dana at the traditional meeting place. Nobody else showed up ? perhaps everyone else has real lives. Anyway, we trudged over to Conifer where we were able to see snowmaking...

I missed those Downdraft days. Pre-Big Mac Attack Big Dipper was great in its hey day - the best on-piste tree run in the East ...anywhere ...period. Yah, one of my best days ever was in January 1987 on a Sunday. The Giants were in an NFL playoff game which caused many to flee the slopes...

The 20th Hole is NOT a trail. Get real. It's a reference to the Sugarbush Golf Course where some of the local hardcores like to kick 'n glide and cool out for a mellow change of pace from cranking out verts' in the Valley. Duh.

note of interest regarding the might K

Geez, you're right. There musta' been something in the water right around then. That map was awesome and could keep one busy for hours. I think the real nail in the coffin came when the ASS - ooops, I mean ASC - came in and for one of their marketing stunts, they came up with "Nivis"...

That's just it. It's all about fun. Gimme' a fun roller coaster ride novice/intermediate trail over some ballyhooed homogenized straight featureless (it's featureless except the weird-shaped snowmaking trail moguls) sheet of frozen McCrap that Mr./Ms. Marketing Puke labelled "Expert" where you...

Finally got around to skiing that last February. Lousy coverage in spots, but a real hoot where there was coverage. It certainly has potential.

All of 'em :D . All of the Classic Narrow Eastern Trails are my favorites. Walt's Trail (Novice) and Semi-Tough (Blue) at Glen Ellen are neat ones. Polecat (Novice) at Wildcat is another one. Gulf of Slides trail is awesome. It's tough to beat Lower Antelope at Mad River Glen on a powder day.

    Home ski area?

Mad River Glen is my home. The more I ski at Smuggs Crotch :P , the more I like it. Lift served favorites for me in the East: MRG, Smuggs, Jay, Cannon, Wildcat. Sugarbush gets overlooked a lot and I had forgotten how good the skiing is there .....I'd rather go there than the seemingly much...

During the prior week, we watched weather forecasts and avalanche reports. As the week progressed, it became apparent that Saturday was gonna be a great day for skiing corn in the New Hampshire high country.

On Saturday morning, Dana, Jonathan and I skinned outta the lot at the...

Saturday, we were blessed with approx 3-5" of new wet snow and bright sunny skies ...... yup, this was New Hampshire, above the 4000 foot elevation. From what I could tell, everything else in New England was under gloom.

For the avalanche report, Brian typed in "we are most concerned...

On Friday night, I crossed the White River near Bethel and was greeted by fog. It got
really dense after I turned onto Route 17; so much that I slowed to a crawl and found out that
I was on the wrong side of the road. A pair of
pints at the Hyde Away were well earned.

...

Mid-Winter conditions. The App Gap snowgun was
turned on. Off-piste or on-piste - it didn't
matter 'cuz it was all good. Do indeed go skiing
in Vermont, ASAP.

At a little after 3:30AM on Saturday morning, I hit the road. The prior evening, I
had to go...

I was disappointed in the clear night skies on the way up I-89. But as I approached The Granville Gulf Line, that changed as snow fell and treacherous driving ensued.

On Saturday, App Gap Effect winds were making squally conditions and light untracked
covered the surface...

On Friday night, I was bummed out when I stopped at the I-89 rest area just north of Exit 4 and found that a Death Crust had formed on the
surface. But, the following morning, the good news was that MRG remained unscathed. The crust apparently only got as far North as Granville Gulf. The...

Saturday was another cold one ..... and it was humid, too. Much like last weekend, good skiing could be found if you tuned up & polished your powder nose. Trail check was very good on Panther and the woods skied very well.
We ran some sleds with Tiger conducting the show. Tiger is...
