Mammoth, CA - April Fools Powder [4.1.2012]

There were some long lines, but not nearly as bad as many other bluebird weekend powder days. I actually got more untracked runs that normal (and untracked really meant no tracks at all). Gravy Chute, Roger's Ridge, The Bear, Sliver, Paranoid 2, and Hemlocks (twice) were all high-quality...

    Alta March 18th

Protein bars (Promax are my new favorites for not freezing and providing a ton of protein), large hunks of cheese, salami, nuts. It's healthier, and you can eat them on the lift! If I were to eat lunch in a cafeteria every day, it'd cost me at least $10/day, so multiplied by ~60 days, that's...

    La Grave, France 2-26 & 27-12

As I thought I'd be in France this year, I paid a bit more attention to snow reports than normal (although I hardly kept up on a day-to-day basis). The big storms were in December/January, leaving most of France with an excellent base. However, the main thing I noticed is that temperatures...

    The new skis finally arrived!

Eric Hjorleifson skis on Dynafits pretty much all the time and I know he's been converting many other pros. He's not a big guy, either, and most importantly, if you watch his POV edits, you'll notice how unbelievably balanced he is. He seemingly puts very little stress on the binding, and he's...

    The new skis finally arrived!

The S7 skis really short. My dad is similarly sized and basically a low-level expert at this point, used to skinny shaped skis in the low 170s, and when he demoed the 188 S7, he didn't have any issue with the length. Rossi also measures length along the base I believe, so the 188 S7s are...

Re: Baldface Snowcat, Jan. 23-26, 2012

Just some general questions. How long are these runs? I'm guessing 1000-2000ft of vert, but not sure. Then, how frequently are you stopping to regroup? Also, how does the group generally react to delays (like having one bad skier in a group, or searching for a wedding ring)?

Mustang Powder Snowcat, Jan. 17-20, 2012

    That's not a sideslip, that's a straightline!

Alta, UT 1/17/12 with Dean Cummings

Praxis Skis have definitely been the most durable I've ever used. Landed straight on a pointy rock from 15 feet and not even a mark, and the sidewalls are truly indestructible.

Apparently, they can refill the reservoir.

    Whistler, 12/31-1/3

Today was much better, but extremely crowded. I had to use all my liftline skills to make things manageable. Found untracked snow in the trees of Raptor's Ride of Solar Coaster, but the snow was pretty heavy and big moguls meant I skied pretty conservatively. I then got to Patrol Trees twice...

    Whistler, 12/31-1/3

That guy was definitely the funniest and friendliest patroller I've ever met, especially considering the amount of pressure he must have been under on a miserable day.

    Whistler, 12/31-1/3

First four days have been very good, obviously way better than anything at Mammoth thus far. 12/31: I spent the whole day at Blackcomb. Crowds were predictably pretty bad, but taking the singles line meant lines were never over 5 minutes. Found an untracked line down Blackcomb Glacier when it...

Ski FREE at Mammoth this Friday 12/9

There's almost no reason for people to be paying full price on lift tickets, especially anyone that posts on a ski forum. The season is so long and the passes get paid off so quickly that I can't seeing not buying a pass. I fully expect for my daily rate to be below $5 a day by the end of the...

Ski FREE at Mammoth this Friday 12/9

Yep, the amount of snowmaking is extraordinarily impressive and everything is skiing well. Canyon Lodge is about ready to go.

Ski FREE at Mammoth this Friday 12/9

It was not especially crowded today. Never waited once for a lift.

    Mammoth 12/3-4: Surprisingly goood

With no snow and the crazy midweek wind, I wasn't expecting much, but the groomers were actually as good as they'll ever get for skiing fast. Firm but totally carvable, and the cold temperatures and low skier density kept it smooth all day. SoCal people have heard the no-snow news, so it was...

    Mammoth 11/12-13

No pictures and no decent terrain for a video, so I'll keep this brief... With just limited groomers on Chairs 1 and 3 open, the runs were crowded, especially on Saturday. Conditions on the groomers were actually pretty good, and soft enough that bumps formed by early afternoon in the narrower...

    Ski Pants?

Got some 10 day old Arc'teryx top-of-the-line pants for $50. There were some small holes in one knee. Fixed that up for ~$10 and I have materials for future repair. Seems like a good deal to me for $60.

Death Valley Skiing and Onion Valley

My own personal gear weighed very little, but I had a Coleman Stove, huge propane tank, bear canister, and 6-person car camping tent. Not the ideal camping equipment or equitable distribution, but thankfully I have a really big pack.
